(I took the liberty of stickying this thread. For all new members struggling with filling out their character sheets, use this sheet as a reference to the sort of things you should be including.)
Name: Night Whisper
Nickname: Nighty, Night or squirt (By his siblings)
Age: 27
Gender: Stallion
Species: Bat Pony
Place of Birth: In the caves near the eastern border of Equestria.
Occupation: Former Lunar Guard (Huscarl to Dame Plush Ramen), currently an unemployed wanderer.
Allegiance: Neutral (For now), though he is very anti Chrysalis
Relationship Status: It's complicated. Seriously.
Mane: Night Whisper's mane is slightly longer than it used to be, as it sits wild and unkempt. His mane and tail are dark blue in color.
Eyes: A glowing, brilliant golden color. Unlike most pony sub species, Night's pupils are slits, much like a cat's.
Living Relatives: While Night grew up in a rather large family, It is unknown to him if any of them are still alive.
General Description: Sporting an ash grey coat, Night isn't quite as muscular as he used to be. Nowadays, the bat's body is more streamlined, preferring athleticism over bulk. Because of his time spend traveling, Night looks rather ratty, though not to a disgusting degree. Unlike a pegasus, Night possesses no feathers. Instead, his wings are leathery, and as the name would imply, bat like. Since his time in Saddle Arabia, Night is rarely ever seen not wearing a set of light leather armor, and robes. His face is wrapped and covered, a few strands of hair and his eyes the only thing poking through. A long, gnarled scar runs along his abdomen where he was impaled.
Skills: Night Whisper has acquired some new talents over the course of five years. Firstly, his combat ability has increased dramatically since his time in Saddle Arabia. The monks there taught him the strange, unorthodox fighting style that many Saddle Arabians use, focusing on tripping up and confusing your opponent. Night has combined this style with the head first, blunt fighting style he learned in the Lunar Guard. His stamina has also increased quite a bit since his training in Arabia. On top of this, Night Whisper is proficient in first aid, utilizing both traditional medicine, and exotic healing methods from the east. When Night Whisper sets his sights on a goal, there is little that can deter him from that goal. He is also more than capable of living by his own means, living off the land. As an additional bonus, his natural biology as a bat pony provides many perks. He can hear miles better than any other species of pony, see better in the dark, and requires less sleep.
Faults: Ever since the events that took place five years ago, Night Whisper's personality has shifted greatly. He has become cold, and rather uncaring. While he used to be a fiercely loyal pony, his betrayal at the hooves of Plush Ramen has left Night rather reserved, hesitant to really let anypony in. He prefers his own company, and because of this is hesitant in accepting allies. Night often finds himself awake most nights, haunted by the memories of being impaled, and hunted down in his own hospital bed. While the monks have taught him how to keep it under control, his temper can still cause problems. Night has become very suspicious of others, often planning out different ways to take them down if they plan on betraying him. While he is physically capable, the monks were not completely able to heal his wounds. While he can walk, fly, run and fight, his scar can often come back and cause him crippling pain at the most inconvenient times.
Equipment: Now holding the same philosophy as the monks that took him in, Night believes in travelling light. Because of this, he carries little to no personal affections with him. He does, however, carry a long spear like glave. This is no ordinary glave, as the counterweight on the bottom can detach and dangle by a chain. Night often uses this to catch ponies off guard, and trip them up. Night wears a set of worn leather armor and robes. Night also carries several bandages and healing salves, used to prevent infection should he get wounded.
Last, but certainly not least, Night Whisper carries an item that he considers very precious. A single potion, used by high caliber warriors in Saddle Arabia, that will render you immune to magical effects and attacks for fifteen minutes after consumption. He plans on using this when confronting a certain orange mare.
History: Night Whisper grew up near the eastern border of Equestria in a small colony of Bat Ponies. His colony lived in a large expanse of cramped tunnels and caves. Bat Ponies have never been strong in the population department, due to most of them being born infertile, so the few bat ponies that there are can often be found bunched up together, living in a large family like clan. Every fertile Bat Pony was expected to have children, and a lot of them, and because of this, Night grew up with three brothers and three sisters. The bat had a rather quaint childhood, spending most of his time playing with the other bat children and working with his dad and brothers collecting fruit. It was his father's job to collect fruit for the entire colony, and he would often share the workload with his children, Night included. It was a rather unremarkable existence, that was, until the faithful day that Princess Luna returned and reinstated the Lunar Guard. There was suddenly a high demand for Bat Ponies in the Equestrian Military, and Night Whisper's brothers were more than eager to travel to Canterlot and sign up. Night wanted to join his brothers, though one fact kept him at home; out of all his siblings, Night Whisper had been the only one born fertile. It was now the young Night's duty to stay with his clan and forcibly marry another fertile bat pony mare. Night hated the idea of being forced to marry somepony. His future wife was nice and all, but the idea of marriage at the young age of sixteen terrified the young stallion to no end. The teenage Bat Pony would pack his things and run away to Canterlot, abandoning his family and clan.
By the time he reached Canterlot by foot and by hitching rides on passing carriages, Night would discover that all of his brothers had already graduated from the academy, and were deployed elsewhere. Having no family or friends to turn to in this unfamiliar environment, the young and ignorant bat was forced to survive off of his own means. Selling all of his possessions for what handful of bits they were worth, Night found himself able to rent out a half destroyed mess of an apartment in the slums of Canterlot. It was a tough living, having little to no income and ponies constantly breaking into your home and stealing what little you had, but his sacrifice would soon pay off. Night was admitted into the Royal Equestrian Military Academy, and after a short six month training program, Night graduated with honors.
For several years, Night would make a fairly comfortable living as a palace guard, able to save up enough bits to move into a much nicer home. It wasn't exactly a mansion, but at least it wasn't falling apart. He would find himself guarding high ranking officials, Canterlot nobles and foreign dignitaries, though he never got the privilege of guarding the Princess herself. Everything was looking up, that was, until Queen Chrysalis and her army of Changelings declared open war on Equestria. Night Whisper, despite his own wishes, remained as a palace guard, while his brothers were sent out to fight Changelings. One night, the bat pony received a terrible piece of news; his eldest brother had been killed on the front lines. This sent Night Whisper into a fit of depression that wouldn't break for months.
For the second time in his life, a single event would change his very foundation forever. He had been informed that he was being reassigned as a Huscarl to a newly appointed Dame, Plush Ramen. Apparently, she rescued the Princess. Night thought nothing of it at first, mostly focused on the fact that his paycheck nearly doubled. That was, until he saw her for the first time. There was something about her that set her apart from the other mares, whether it was her haunting blue eyes, or the way she carried herself with such insecure strength. It became apparent very quickly that she was different. She wasn't like anypony he had ever worked under before, she was kind and didn't treat him like some sort of statue. As they spent more and more time at eachother's side, the realization dawned on Night that he was falling for this mare, and that she might be falling for him as well.
That was, until one night when her past would catch up with her. A Unicorn named Joxer would barge his way into the picture, revealing things about Plush that shook Night to his core. It turned out that Plush's past was much more checkered than he realized. She had done horrible things in the past, horrible things to children. When the mare attempted to take her own life, Night made a split second decision and sprung into action, saving her life. It was then that they confessed their love for one another, and Night made what was possibly the worst decision of his life; he decided to cover for the mare rather than turn her in, a mistake that he hasn't forgiven himself for to this day.
He would partake on several more dark adventures with Plush Ramen and her apparent connections to the Canterlot mob, until something changed in her. Something magical, something dark and terrible... Plush proceeded to kill her friend Swift Gale and Fader, then proceeded to impale Night with his own sword. Left for dead, if it wasn't for Zecora and Rain Storm, he surely would have died in the forest that night. Night had been told that he may never walk properly again, and that he was lucky to even be alive, though even this wasn't enough for the orange mare.
Plush snuck into Night's hospital room, and attempted to finish him off. The wounded bat fought with everything he had, viciously biting into the mare and doing anything he could to stay alive. Their little scrap was eventually broken up, and Night never saw Plush Ramen from that point onward.
5 years summary:
For five months Night Whisper would spend in that damnable hospital bed, haunted by the memory of his lover trying to kill him over and over again. The bat was given an honorable dispatch from the military with a small financial compensation when leaving the hospital. As the doctor had told him, Night was rendered unable to walk unassisted, and was forced to lean on a walking cane. Being plunged into a fit of both physical and emotional pain, Night Whisper decided to leave Canterlot for good. The very sight of the city sickened him, all he wanted was to return home to his family. Due to his crippling wounds, it took the bat much longer to return home than ever before, and when he did return, he was greeted with a terrible sight. It turned out that during his travels, Lord Tenebris had won the war, banishing the Princess' and establishing himself as King. Since the Bat Ponies stood loyal to Princess Luna even after her second banishment, Lord Tenebris declared the species enemies to Equestria. Clans across the country would located and exterminated, and Night's clan was no exception. The place that he had once called home had been burnt to ash, and completely devoid of life.
This absolutely crushed Night Whisper beyond anything. Everything he had known was falling apart; the life he had built for himself, the one he loved, his family and clan, even his own body all torn away from him. Night had debated suicide on several occasions, but he knew that his family would want him to live on. He would be one of the last bat ponies, and as such he carried the future of his entire species on his shoulders. Fleeing the country via a smugglers ship, Night Whisper found himself in Saddle Arabia, Equestria's eastern neighbor. Saddle Arabia had aided the Princess' in the war, and because of this Night felt that this would be the best place to flee. For several month, Night would spend his time living in a small village simply... existing. The days were spent begging for money, while the nights were spent drinking himself to death. Night had slowly become a bitter shell of his former self, cold and harsh to those around him.
One night while heavily drinking in the local pub, a Saddle Arabian noble decided to stop in. He was a prissy thing, and liked to pick on those he viewed beneath himself. Now amongst the Saddle Arabian crowds, Night Whisper stuck out like a sore thumb. Bat ponies were rare in any part of the world, but especially so in Saddle Arabia. The noble decided to pick on Night, calling him a multitude of names including a 'freak of nature', and 'blood sucking pest'. Normally Night had been used to being gawked at, but that night was different. That night Night Whisper snapped. Taking the bottle of ale he had been drinking, the bat smashed it against the counter top and viciously attacked the noble with the broken bottle. Night gashed the Arabian's face open, severely scarring him and blinding him in the left eye. This attack didn't last long however, as the nobles guards grabbed the crippled bat pony and proceeded to beat him half way to death. He was thrown into a dungeon, and set to hang in three days time for his crime.
On the second night in prison, Night was visited by a pony adorned in robes. He claimed to be a member of a group of secluded monks who lived in the distant mountains. He had been traveling through the village when he witnessed the situation with Night Whisper and the noble. The monk recognized Night as a tortured soul, and offered him the chance at a new life. At first, Night didn't want to hear any of it. He was upset and hurt, and practically given up on living. The monk and the bat talked through until the sun rose, and Night poured his heart out to the pony, telling him of his story. Eventually, the monk talked Night into agreeing, and on the third night, several monks broke the bat pony out of jail and took him with them to the mountains.
For the next four years, Night lived in the mountains with the band of monks. Over time, they used their exotic healing remedies to heal Night's wounds; for the first time in a long time, Night Whisper could walk normally again. They taught him the monk way of life, as well as their healing remedies and how to fight. The monks were famed across Saddle Arabia for their skills in martial arts, even though they only used these skills in self defense. Night finally felt at home, the monks considered him one of them, and in turn Night thought of them as his family.
Sometimes however, the demons of our past will simply not leave us be. The memories of Plush Ramen and the fate of his clan continued to plague his dreams, until Night came to a horrible realization; he needed closure. Saying farewell to the monks and swearing to return one day, Night Whisper packed his things and set back out for Equestria.
