Name: Aegis Dare
Nickname: (Optional)
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Species: Pegasus
Place of Birth: Fillydelphia
Occupation: Formerly a wandering adventurer/Battle Instructor and Dinner Chef & Food Prep for Camp New Hayven
Allegiance: Neutral. He is loyal to those he protects.
Relationship Status: Single
Mane: Long locks of jet black topped with strawberry pink streaking through it, especially through his bangs
Eyes: Bright Sky blue
Living Relatives: Father, Advent Dare. Currently missing in action, presumed dead.
General Description: Aegis stands at average height and sports a slim, athletic build. His most striking features are his androgynous looks, bearing a body and facial structure more akin to a mare, though particularly sharp-eyed ponies could tell he is male if they look closely. As a result, he possesses greater dexterity to his body, but he tends to be lacking in other areas, such as his height, and a portion of his strength. He also bears a few scars along his hooves and shoulders from his exploring.
Aegis is usually a friendly and easy-going sort, the kind who drifts with the wind from one adventure to another before coming home to rest a while. This wandering nature has gifted him with a breadth of knowledge and an open-minded outlook on the world around him, though his friendly nature has led him into trouble once or twice, forcing him to relying on quick thinking and fast talking or his fancy hoofwork to get him out of it. He prefers not to fight or take any one pony's side, trying to resolve situations peacefully via the middle of the road or a third option until there's no other choice left to him. Despite this peaceful nature, Aegis does not believe in complete pacifism. He also has a vested interest in keeping other ponies alive and safe, willing to go to whatever lengths he has to to make that a reality. This can present a dark side to Aegis, as he has to be careful that his protective nature doesn't lead him to throw away his morals and ideals to do what he believes to be right. He also finds it hard to back down when his ideals and beliefs are challenged, living under the impression that a pony needs something to believe in. Ultimately, Aegis still holds hope for a better tomorrow.
Skills: Aegis is a skilled martial artist with several years of practice and honing through his travels, which has also made him strong and durable. He is also perceptive and often looks for things other ponies might miss. He possesses more than a bit of knowledge, though he has admitted that he has trouble storing it all in memory, and thus he got into the habit of keeping journals. He is also kind-hearted, trying to be there to lift others up and help them through the challenges of daily life.
Faults: While it is one of his strengths, Aegis' kind heart can be a weakness, as it presents him with challenges he's not always ready to face. He is reluctant to start a fight until he's left with no other choice, and he is very reluctant to kill. Instead, he will try to find a way to show mercy. This can lead him to cause himself mental harm to avoid killing or being the aggressor. His preference for staying neutral in arguments and taking the middle of the road can also make it hard for him to choose a side when there is no middle of the road.
Equipment: A pair of weathered and beaten saddle bags, a pair of old Wingblades that have been repaired several times and a collection of journals dating back several years.
History: Born and raised in Fillydelphia, Aegis Dare was a bit of an odd sort. He wasn’t into sports like the other Pegasi his age, and was usually daydreaming. He was picked on for his looks and quiet nature, though it didn’t bother him since he was usually off in his own little world anyway. One thing that got his attention was seeing others get picked on, and he repeatedly stood up to bullies. But, since he wasn’t the athletic type, he couldn’t do much to help, which frustrated him to no end. Seeking to help Aegis build some confidence in himself and give him the tools to defend himself and others, his father enrolled him in a martial arts class. He was overjoyed to learn something new, but he left sometime after, finding the rigid training and repetitive practice to be boring.
He was inspired by the determination that the martial arts ponies possessed, and continued his training on his own terms. He began writing about it, discovering a talent and love for the art. He started writing about everything; homework, eating, his mix-and-match martial arts style. His father saw Aegis’ talent and suggested trying out for his school talent show. Seeing this as a challenge, Aegis began working on a story. He made up a superhero, and wrote a story long enough to fill a small book. Then came the talent show. Aegis hadn’t been so nervous in his life, but with some encouragement from his dad, he stepped out on the stage and read his story aloud. When he finished, the crowd cheered, and Aegis earned his Cutie Mark, the symbol for the superhero in his book.
Aegis graduated, and spent time honing his skills as a writer and martial artist, ironically becoming more athletic than the ponies who used to tease him. He mostly travels Equestria, looking for stories and inspiration, to finish a project he began many years ago. He never forgot what his father told him before he left Fillydelphia: “Don't be afraid to stand for what you believe in, even if it means standing alone.”
When the war broke out, Aegis found the winds that carried him becoming less and less calm as the fighting began and escalated. Unwilling to join the fight, Aegis fled both armies. Finding that the peaceful territory was growing less and less common, Aegis almost fled the nation entirely, but he happened upon a roaming herd looking for a new home of their own. Hoping to find a place of peace where they could be safe, Aegis travelled with them, lending his knowledge and skills to the group. His young age led him to try harder to prove his worth to the group, despite his pre-war travels and tendency to get wrapped up in various adventures. A small collection of journals he keeps close to his heart detail a few of such adventures, and act as proof of his personal experience. The first of these journals details his first adventure at the age of 17, where he met Noble Persona, who remained a close friend until they parted ways 3 years later. To present day, he has not yet reunited with the stallion. During his tenure in the group, he offered to be a cook and a mediator for the group when required.
As the war slowly dragged on, Aegis saw divisions begin to arise within the ranks and while he supported Genesee's path of peace, he couldn't agree with the stallion's absolute pacifism and neither could he disagree with the ponies willing to take up arms to take back their home. As such, he offered to teach his brand of martial arts to ponies. During this time, he no longer recited his old mantra of 'clear water' to himself, since he tried not to get worked up in the first place.
Even to present day, Aegis prefers not to take centre stage, remaining in the background until he is needed and returning to the peace and quite of the outer fringes of group politics. While he is not eager to enter the war, he firmly believes they can't hide forever and that, despite his support for Genesee, he believes the stallion he respected will eventually create so many rules that they may as well have lived under the new rulers. This is just one more reason Aegis offered to teach martial arts. One day, they'll be forced to fight, and he wants to be ready for when that day comes.
