Name: Crystal Song
Nicknames: Crystal, Pony Of Shadows, Nightingale, Mane-iac
Age: A lady never tells, darling (It's 21, okay? (Alright, 25. Are you happy now?! ...jerks.))
Gender: Female
Species: Unicorn
Place of Birth: Canterlot
Occupation: Actress and singer
Allegiance: Her family; Her second family (Folk Play's Theater Troupe); Artists, whoever they may be.
Chaotic Good, sometimes pretending to be Chaotic Evil
Relationship Status: Single and lively
Mane: Black with a green tint; usually long and flowing; Knows a few good hair manipulation spells (they’re not that hard to learn)
Eyes: Bright green
Living Relatives: Her acting troupe, even if they are not biologically related.
Her parents are nobles from Canterlot. She has some Crystal Pony heritage from before the Empire’s fall on her father’s side, giving her coat and mane a light shine and with a little TLC even a crystalline sparkle. This trait is developed the strongest in her for several generations in their family, which is where she has her name from. It is still noticeable in the rest of her family, though (The crystal shine of her father's moustache is one of his greatest prides).
She doesn’t know how her parents are doing after the war, but isn’t overly worried about them.
General Description: Crystal is a light pink unicorn with a dark green, practically black mane. Slender and already quite beautiful by pony standards, she is a wizard with clothes, makeup and smaller aesthetic spells, all part of her upbringing as higher Canterlot nobility.
Though she is clever, decently intelligent, and educated in all the mannerisms, politics and other subjects a Canterlot noble needs to know, she tends to act like a bit of a ditz when she doesn’t have to be serious. She’s optimistic and hard to get down, at least on the outside. Of course being an actress, few ponies will ever know if she feels as cheerful and spirited on the inside.
Cutie Mark: A pink crystal heart with a dark green (nearly black), upside down note laid over it. It signifies her talent acting and singing, but also plays at her penchant for playing villains and antagonists.
Skills: Crystal is a professional and naturally talented actress and singer. She worked at the Canterlot Theater whenever she happened to be in town, playing minor roles or occassionally the villain characters. She is good at improvising, including stand-up comedy and even musical numbers. From her education as an actress she has learned how to imitate voices and sounds. Her vocal range is very broad, spanning the whole range of female pitches, though she excels especially at the high and low ends of the vocal spectrum. She has learned a few spells to help expand her pitch in acting school, though she doesn’t use them often.
She's decently good at ventriloquism from an extracurricular at her acting school (meaning she can talk without visibly moving her mouth).
For one of her favorite (if not the favorite) role she has learned to control hair with her telekinesis, strengthening it and forming tentacles and other things with it. She has also learned a simple spell to preserve dead biomatter (used by farmtown unicorns for food and the like) and a few herbal suds to keep hair (dead and live) smooth and silky.
The ingredients for those suds are kept in a notebook as well as many other recipes for suds, potions, medicine and the like she picked up during her travels with the theater troupe, especially familial recipes and tricks handed down through the generations in small country towns and villages (many of them without actual magical properties and kept as soup recipes or handy tricks or advice). She is actually not very good at cooking and has only managed to learn a few of them, relying on one of her troupe members to test and prepare them.
She knows two spells to change the color and of her fur coat, her mane and her tail and a couple more to change her mane and tail styles (taught to unicorns in the Academy as extracurricular activity). She also knows how to dress up, behave herself, manners, mannerisms, etiquette and everything else necessary to move through high society (taught to everypony in the Canterlot nobility as mandatory 5-50 year course).
Crystal is barely above average in terms of magic stamina and slightly below average in terms of raw power. She can assemble a small two-pony stage or help assemble a larger stage without noticeably exhausting herself. Trying to assemble their group's large stage without help, however, leaves her too exhausted to be of much help in the actual show.
While no earth pony farmer, Crystal's slender figure is deceptively strong. Strong enough to pull her own small caravan from town to town and keep up with their group (or on her own), at the very least (about the size of Trixie's old caravan).
She is also proficient in Martial Act, which is an inside joke among actors and mainly consists of pretending to be good at [insert actual fighting style].
Faults: Crystal has a flair for the dramatic and grandstanding, never able to resist the opportunity for a great entrance. She does manage to reign it in around other artists of her trade so as not to overshadow them (too much), but outside of her work all bets are off.
She gets a strong headache from magically generated scents (spells and the likes), though most natural perfumes only enhanced by magic are okay.
She also likes to act the villain a little too much, putting off many ponies who don’t know her at first. She also has a tendency to get into her role a little too much, especially when she is under pressure.
She is not brave nor valiant and doesn't see much point in being either. While she respects ponies who are, she figures that there are better and further-in-the-future ways to die for her personally.
Equipment: A bag of bits, a saddlebag full of utilities and a caravan full of her acting supplies, including a light two-pony stage ready for assembly. Inside her caravan wagon she also has a professional makeup kit including mane- and fur dye, some dried herbs, plants and minerals for the few suds and potions she can actually reliably prepare, a couple costumes and accessories, a large bag of hair (don't ask) and several hoof puppets.
History: Crystal grew up in the heart of Canterlot, her parents being rather busy but still loving and supporting parents (at least by the standards of Canterlot nobility).
One day she trotted into the start of a showing of a traveling theater troupe who was stopping in Canterlot. She watched the showing with rapt attention, even after the play had ended, not even noticing the flash on her flank.
After running back to the troupe and talking to the leader of their group, she managed to get his permission to travel with them if her parents agreed. While her parents were reluctant at first, after they found out who the leader of the troop really was (the brother of the headmaster of the Canterlot Academy Of Fine Arts) she managed to convince them to let her go with them for a year until the troupe would be in Canterlot again. After her return she spent another three years studying at the Canterlot Academy of Fine Arts under the watch of her previous mentor and troupe leader’s brother, the headmaster of the Academy Role Play.
Graduating before she was even twenty, she soon went back on the road, traveling sometimes with her old group and sometimes alone. During that time, just after leaving Canterlot, she met a young earth pony stallion in a rough spot. They travelled together for some time, getting to know each other until she could finally convince him that he wouldn’t feel free until he went back to Canterlot to confront his problems.
After Tenebris Dawn: When the war started and she lost track of her parents in the chaos of Canterlot, Crystal met up with her old group and second family again, traveling with them both to get around better and to continue to bring ponies what joy their shows could provide. They have continued to travel like that for the five years, always doing their best to stay away from the fighting and under the radar, visiting many less populated areas and occassionally even other countries around Equestria.
Trivia: -Due to changing tastes and wanting to entertain younger and less formal audiences, Crystal and her troupe adapted many modern stories as plays. Some of her favorite roles are comic book villains, like the Mane-iac from Power Ponies, The Jester from Batmare and Blackhide The Pirate from One Bit.
- The "Pony of Shadows" isn't actually part of any specific play, but a general role and personal favorite, the shadowy yet-to-be-revealed antagonist.
-Crystal writes many of her lines and even whole songs herself.
Folk Play's Traveling Theater Troupe:
A group of traveling actors, artists and all-around showponies the 'troupe consider themselves a family with Folk Play as the father. Folk Play himself is a jovial and charitableold geezer older stallion, who will probably have to be dragged off the stage by Mort himself. But of course he isn't the only interesting personality in the group.
-Role Play: Folk Play’s brother and former headmaster of the Canterlot Academy of Fine Arts. When he came across the group after the destruction of the Academy and his subsequent leaving of Canterlot, he hadn’t been acting for years. Everypony likes to joke about that and he likes to joke back that he still has more talent in his left hind leg than the rest of them combined. If Folk is the jovial and charitable father figure of the troupe, Role is the gruff and grumpy uncle. Everypony knows it’s just an act, though, much to his consternation.
-Long Play: Folk Play's grandson and probably not Vinyl Scratch's long-lost brother. He's the main one responsible for music, light effects and everything technological in the shows, which is a lot more than you'd think since the group tries to adapt ever more modern stories into theater form.
-Fair Play: Folk's daughter and the group's main illusionist. Her name doesn't relate to sports - as many, many, maaaany... ponies have assumed over the years -, but she does play the fair maiden quite well. It also doesn't relate to sports because she'll happily trip you up and skip across your fallen body with an innocent smile in any kind of athletic event. She’s very competitive in any area outside of her acting.
-The Triplets: Three unidentical triplet colts with artistic talent especially in the less sophisticated areas. Hat Trick the earth pony has a talent for sleight-of-hoof tricks, borderline cheating that's only just within the boundaries of the rules and generally frustrating other ponies who want to beat him at something or figure out his tricks. He wears a muddy green beret wherever he goes, and sometimes even on stage. Artful Dodger the unicorn has similar talents, though his lean more on improvisation and less on finding loopholes and keeping it technically within the rules as his brother's do. He wears a black top hat wherever he goes, and sometimes even on stage. Conniving "Conner" Misdirection the pegasus has a talent for smoothtalking and smooth-moving. If he wanted to turn to crime, he could talk a pony into giving them their wallet, he could take a pony's wallet without them noticing, and he could probably even take everything except the wallet off a pony without them noticing. He wears a red basecap wherever he goes. He still does sometimes, but it's part of the show and he gives them back.
Aside from their seperate talents, the Triplets can change disguises faster than any other pony in the troupe and can do so even faster when they do so together... somehow. It's impossible to figure out even and especially if you watch them. Their acts of female characters in plays are without exception absolutely horrible and absolutely hilarious. Especially so when they "forget" to take off their trademark headwear. A beret on top of a chateau does not a pretty filly make.
(I request the permission to, if not play the troupe when necessary then at least make general assumptions about them, like how they travel with Crystal unless there is a specific reason for them not to; I'll try to avoid using them for anything other than showacts involving Crystal (and maybe introductions involving Folk Play as the head and spokespony of the group); They are still open to be used as NPCs, and if you don't want to use any of the premade characters there are still enough as of yet unnamed artists in the troupe. This request is partially based on my experiences that nobody wants to play my OCs as NPCs, regardless of that being their specific purpose.)
