He also has a backpack filled with mementos from the old days: a picture of his family, kitchen utensils, herbs and spices, talon sharpener, and a comb.
The only armor he wears is a shoulder brace and knee guards. More for looks than anything.
History:
Vaan was is the oldest of four siblings. Growing up in a small town, he grew up knowing everyone in the village and quickly became know as the neighborhood trouble maker. Though, despite this, he grew up to be a nice young griffon. Always taking the time to say hello before continuing to run away. Too bad, a nice personality wasn't enough to get into any griffons schools. Low grades and a history of his past deeds landed him in a bad situation.
unlike the ponies, griffons didn't get cuties mark to tell them their destiny. They kinda had to struggle for it.
Fortunately, Vaan was lucky enough to find a job in a restaurant in another griffon village. After thinking on the job, he decided it was a step he needed to take. Ready to start a life of his own, he went for the job and the place promptly replied with a, “You’re hired”. Without hesitation, he packed his everything he would need and left. Well, he only left after everyone in town said their goodbyes to their "young trouble maker".
At his first job, they started him off as a dish washer. It was a simple job; it wasn’t too hard. He earned enough bits to rent a small home, but that was it. Nothing recreational was within his budget. Well, not until the head chef fired the prep chef for coming to work late to often. With no one to fill the vacancy, Vaan was promoted. Sadly, he didn’t know too much about cooking. He mother did all that while he played outside with family and friends. But, having no other way to provide for himself, he quickly learned.
At first, the recipes were tricky and hard to understand. After many accident and horrible outcomes, Vaan began to learn and even improve himself. Soon enough, recipes became easier to remember, cooking was actually becoming fun, and he enjoyed waking up every morning. Not to mention the extra pay that came with the job. He could finally do and buy other things he wanted.
Many months passed, and Vaan was eventually made one of the head chefs of the restaurant. Life was good, yet he felt as if something was missing. He didn’t know what. He had the money, his own home, and everything else he could want, yet he still felt emptiness. That is, until a new baker was hired. Once he saw her, he knew what would fill the gap.
Though, try as he, she wouldn’t go on a date with him. It seemed like the only thing she could produce besides baked goods was a solid no. Though, Vaan isn’t one to just accept and give up. He wanted to at least have one date with her, and he would get it.
“I can bake better-tasting bread than you,” Vaan said one day during their break.
“I severely doubt that, Vaan,” She responded, not giving it a second thought.
“How about a wager then, Miss.Ahena?”
“Go on…”
“If I win, I get one date. If you win, I will never ask you out again.”
“Deal! I’ll do anything to stop your annoying question.”
“Anything?”
“Anything besides go on a date with you…”
With the deal struck, the baking began. With expertise, Ahena began preparing her dough. She knew exactly what she was doing. It was her job too. Vaan on the other hand, was exactly keen on baking, yet he was keen on getting his way and sleight of hand. By switching ingredients she used for specialty bread with look alike, he guaranteed his victory. He felt guilty for a period of time. But, the first, second, and third date made him feel a lot better about what he did.
Months later, they were living together, married, and the secret never exposed. Months after that, Vaan’s first child was born-Little Miss Dandelion.
Vaan’s life was fully filled.
Beginning of the War.
Vaan went to take his break little earlier than usual. Not like it mattered. No one has been spending bits on luxuries like going out to eat. As he rested, his boss came up to him and handed him a small package. His words were simple and quick, “Please deliver this package for me.” Vaan shrugged and accepted. Walking around the town was better than being in the small kitchen all day, so he grabbed his bag, put the package inside, and began walking.
Humming a tune, Vaan walked though the empty streets. Many griffons had decided to move hire into the mountains to escape the war. The only ones that stayed were those certain everything would blow over, which weren’t many. The only other griffons were guards who patrolled the town.
“Halt! Empty you bag and let us see what you have,” A guard commanded Vaan.
Not wanting conflict, Vaan did what was told, yet forgot about the package.
“Everything seems to be in order,” said the other guard,” But, what’s in this package of yours?”
Thinking of a lie quickly, Vaan responded, “A gift for my wife. During these times, she needs some cheering up.”
The guards scrunched their faces before handing everything back to Vaan and letting him continue his stroll. Within minutes, he reached his destination. After knocking on the door and it slowly opening up, Vaan was face to face with a skinny griffon that held a pipe in his mouth. He didn’t look like the guy that lived an easy life, but Vaan wasn’t one to judge. He simply took out the package, handed it to the guy, and continued on with his day.
“C’mere, kid,” said the guy at the door, “Ya’ did good. Real good. Take this.”
The griffon handed Vaan a heavy bag of bits, which almost dropped out of his talons.
“Whoa…this is like…two months’ rent…” Vaan replied, shocked at the amount.
“There’s a lot more where that came from. My boys saw how ya’ lied to them guards. All smooth-like. So, I’ll make ya’ a proposition. You keep delivering packages, I keep paying ya’. No questions asked.”
Vaan thought on the deal for a moment. With the way the restaurant was going, he’d be out of work within the month and probably wouldn’t be able to find another one. He had a family to support and this was about to be his only option.
“Alright.”
“Goodboy. Come in ,and let’s talk.”
Five Years Summary
A group of griffons passed through an abandoned town. One of them stopped at an old, worn house. He sat and looked. Gazing and seeing something no one else could. A small smile crept on his face as he removed the scarf from his beak. Then, he remembered something; he reached into his satchel and pulled out a photo of a griffon female and her daughter.
He took a deep breath and shook his head.
“Whoa! Vaan, she’s hot! How long have you been hiding her from us?” asked one griffon flying over his shoulder.
“I haven’t been hiding anything, birdbrain, “replied Vaan, “Mind your own damn business.”
“Aww come-on! Tell me who she is.”
“She’s dead,” Vaan said as he pulled the scarf back over his mouth,
"Oh...dude, sorry. How about the young one?"
"Don't know. I never saw...nor buried the body," Vaan felt his eyes beginning to water,“Let’s go. We have two hours to reach the next check point or we don’t get paid.”
The group continued walking. The sun had barely broken the horizon when they came to a group of ponies standing in a clearing. They looked just as Vaan’s group did. Rogue-like and tired.
A simple wave from one group to another was enough to prove they were suppose to meet. The pony group showed the bits, while Vaan’s group showed the packages. All was going smooth till the leader of the ponies decided to only pay half for late fees. Vaan tried to reason, yet the pony wasn’t having it. Neither was Vaan.
One quick movement, he hit the pony in the jaw and pulled out his crossbow. The other griffons followed suit; the ponies didn’t have time to react. Vaan put the package down and took all the bits plus whatever valuables the ponies had. After that, his flew back to HQ for their next assignment.
