(This is to give all of you worms a better idea of the King Sombra that I play, and a look into his history.)
Name: Sombra
Nickname: King Sombra, Overlord, His Magnificence, the King of All Monsters, Imperator.
Age: Unknown.
Gender: Stallion
Species: Umbrum (living shadow)
Place of Birth: The Frozen North
Occupation: King of shadows, Ruler of the Crystal Empire, vassal of Queen Chrysalis.
Allegiance: To himself, and the Umbrum.
Relationship Status: Single.
Mane: Black, flowing, and long. It looks as if it was sculpted by strands of shadows. It reflects no light, and can be tamed by no brush.
Eyes: His eyes are red, with reptile like pupils. Instead of having whites around his eyes, he has green, and constant streams of purple mist leak from the corners of his eyes and his tear-ducts.
Living Relatives: Mother: A red crystal somewhere in the frozen wastes... long story.
General Description: King Sombra is the embodiment of shadows and fear. He is tall, strong, and heavily armored. He guards his neck with a gorget, dawns his head with an intimidating crown that goes down the length of his snout, and covers his back & flank with a flowing red kings-cape. His snout is like that of a boar, with strong fangs and a serpents tongue. His coat is the color of ash, as is the base of his thick, curved horn. His horn is by far his most intimidating feature, as it grows redder and redder along its length.
Skills: Being an Umbrum, King Sombra can change into his shadow form at anytime; his shadow form being a large, smokey mass with his eyes or face atop. His shadow form can move quickly and cover vast distances, enough distance to even surround the entire Crystal City. He is also able to conjure and channel his will into Black Crystals, meaning he can listen, see, and use magic from long distances with the crystals acting as conduits. His physical form can be injured, but due to the fact that he's made of shadows, he is able to heal himself almost instantly, and the only true way to harm him is with a type of Love magic. He is naturally talented in the arts of Dark Magic, Fear Magic & Black Magic, however he is untrained in all forms. He has savagely powerful raw-skills, which could easily decimate anypony who stands in his way. He's much like a war-hammer in battle; hitting things with deathly might left & right, but his precision lacks. Fear Magic, however, is something he uses carefully - though still untrained - he knows it well and uses it in all sorts of slimy ways - such as making an entire kingdom disappear! With the aid of a black crystal, King Sombra can crawl into the mind of another pony, and twist their reality; often leaving them standing there staring off into oblivion. He's very good at torturing ponies, and causing severe agony- either for information or for kicks in a dull time. King Sombra is no mastermind, however his is both crafty and clever; oftentimes with a trick or two up his sleeve. He hates not getting the last laugh.
Faults: There are many, many things wrong with the King of Shadows. Firstly, he is a rubbish ruler. He has absolutely no skills as a general when it comes to commanding his Shadow Legions, no idea how to financially run a kingdom, and lacks the patience to either read a book on basic kings etiquette, or listen to his advisers. Because of this, he leaves most of the work to his council, and picks up on the financial issues with stone-cold-slavery, which seems to be working out so far for him.
After being banished for a thousand years, he easily gets bored, and goes to the extreme to keep himself entertained. He throws extravagant parties, puts on gladiator shows in his arena - sometimes participating himself in the ring against some slaves or wild-animals - and straight up antagonizes the residence of the Crystal Empire for fun. King Sombra is also very competitive; finding games to be a good distraction, but if he loses a game, his temper normally goes with it. He rarely has the patience to sit on his throne and listen to ponies ramble about how sad they are, so instead he normally just puts a dead body on the throne with a black crystal so they all think they're talking with the King, when really he's trotting around his castle or is somewhere in the kingdom personally dealing with an issue to quench his thirst for entertainment.
Emotionally, he's a very lonely, sad, and angry stallion. As a colt, he never really made a genuine connection with many ponies, and after he usurped the throne all the ponies he had turned their backs on him. He has nopony but his dull Shadow Legion guards and prisoners to talk to - both of which don't offer much in the name of companionship. On his own, sometimes he leaves the castle dawning a Black Crystal pendant and goes 'under-cover' as a slave or commoner - using his magic to appear as one - hoping to make a connection of some sort, however he rarely does. Aside from that he's quick to anger, and once he's angry he tends to black out, only to awake covered in blood and ash, with a trail of carnage behind him.
While his raw magical power is definitely a force to be reckoned with, it's untamed and often does more harm than good. He easily gives into the thrill and adrenaline of the moment, sometimes making rash decisions and going to the extremes when he shouldn't. He has no idea what his limits or boundaries are, and lacks the discipline to respect them. While he is devastatingly powerful in Dark & Fear Magic, Love magic is by far his strongest weakness.
Equipment: King Sombra wears a crown, a gorget, hoof-protectors, and his cape. Sometimes he carries a black-crystal with him, or his War-Hammer lovingly named Rex.
History: (Based off of Comics, and my own filters.)
King Sombra's arrival into this world was a strange one. In the Crystal Empire - about a thousand years before the crowning of Princess Twilight - an ash colored foal was spotted by a pair of Crystal Guards. The foal looked confused and in a daze, as if he was born just minuets ago. When the guards questioned him, all the foal responded with was a single phrase, which seemed to be the only word he knew. The guards took the foal to the Crystal Empires orphanage, and named him after the phrase: Sombra.
He had no recollection of who he was or who his parents were. Sombra was years behind the rest of the foals his age; having to learn math, science, and language from scratch. Eventually he caught up, though he had no time to take classes on magic, which he rarely ever used anyways. He didn't excel socially either, which wasn't a shock as he was the only non-crystal pony in the Crystal Kingdom.
However one day - on the playground - he did make a friend, and this friend would stick by his side for a very long time. Her name was Radiant Hope, and once they met, they were inseparable. They played their own games, made up their own language, and were made fun-of together. As time went on, their bond grew stronger, and so did Sombra's curiosity. Radiant mentioned something about the Crystal Heart, and Sombra was enthralled with interest. Surprised to find out that he could go to it at any time, he and Radiant went right away to the base of the Crystal Castle where the heart is kept. There -- he saw something that would haunt him for a long time; he saw himself surrounded by shadows, morphing with his body to create one horrific monster. He never told anypony what he saw. Radiant, on the other hand, saw herself as a princess.
After a few days, the horror that Sombra felt from seeing the monster dissipated, and he was back to his 'normal' self. Radiant told Sombra about a wondrous celebration that occurred every year called the Crystal faire, where all the Crystal Ponies come together and energize the Crystal Heart with Love and Happiness to ward off the vague evils. Ecstatic, Sombra and Radiant made plans to go, however, things didn't turn out as expected. The morning of the faire, Sombra found himself paralyzed, and was quickly brought to the hospital. The doctors found nothing wrong with Sombra, meaning they couldn't help lessen the extreme agony and pain he was feeling. Radiant didn't go either, opting to stay by Sombra's bedside instead. Only when the faire was over did he find salvation in rest.
The next morning he awoke feeling perfectly fine! Him and Radiant instantly got back to playing their games, and made plans to see the faire next year -- however, as the next faire rolled around, Sombra found himself in the hospital bed again, and again. Each year, his symptoms grew worse and worse, until eventually his body cracked apart, and shattered like a vase; releasing shadows everywhere. Luckily for him, Radiant was there and trapped him in a bubble. In that bubble, she was able to heal him and restore him to his natural self. In doing this, Radiant earned herself a cutiemark, and discovered her talent for healing magic.
As Radiant worked more and more on her talent, she worked up quite the reputation, and eventually she came to Sombra with a letter bearing the seal of Princess Luna & Celestia. This only meant one thing: She was offered a spot into the School for Gifted Unicorns, and would most likely become a princess herself. Knowing Radiant, Sombra assumed she would accept it, and instead of telling her how he felt, he galloped off and went into the frozen tundra for some solitude where he could think. Radiant saw herself becoming a Princess all those years ago in the Crystal Heart. If her destiny reached her, than so would his, and that terrified him.
He collapsed, tired, and feeling absolutely alone. In his moment of weakness, a voice emanated from the distance, saying: "Sombra, my dear, what is wrong? Why have you come here to see me? Is your work done already?"
When he got up to look who spoke with him, he saw nopony around. only a mound of bright red crystals. He approached it cautiously, and was surprised to find that the crystals were talking to him! Not only that, but the crystal claimed to be his mother, and explained everything to him. The voice told him what he was, what his mission was, and how he was going to do it. It flipped a switch in him that awoke the magic buried deep within. He was also told of the horrible truth, which is if he doesn't get rid of the Crystal Heart by the next Crystal Faire, he will die, and the army waiting beneath the Earth will never rise with him.
The Crystal Heart knew about his true powers, and the Princess of the Crystal Empire most likely knew as well. If he was going to make his move, he had to do it immediately, and he did. Dressed in a cloak, he snuck over to the Crystal Heart and snatched it into a bag. He was surprised how easy it was, however when he turned, he saw the Princess. She tried to relate with him, gave him a choice and tried to offer help, but her words only infuriated him, and he turned her into a Black Crystal Statue, imprisoning her and rendering her helpless. Unfortunately, Radiant was there, and stumbled onto the scene.
The powers that suddenly wakened within him had driven him slightly mad, and filled his mind with ideas of revenge and inflicting pain on all those who tormented him before. He shattered the statue of the Princess and offered Radiance a spot beside him as Queen, where they could rule together. She denied his offer, and fled to the two Alicorn sisters in the neighboring nation. He was infuriated, however he still had too much love for her to destroy her. He let her leave, and took his spot as tyrant of the Crystal Empire, offering to gladly destroy anypony who dared challenge him. He enslaved the ponies of the Crystal Empire and made them dig down into the ground, planning on unearthing his army, and getting ready to make his next move. He scattered the pieces of the old Crystal Empire's Princess across the world, knowing that by the time anypony could restore her, he would be too powerful to stop.
Before he could unearth his army, however, the two sisters flew to the Crystal Empire and banished him to the Frozen North, underneath miles of glacier into a small prison cell. King Sombra knew, however, that he wouldn't be able to put up a fight against the sisters without his army, so he implemented a falesafe to insure that the sisters wouldn't unearth his army and destroy it while he was gone. It was also an added bonus that Radiant Hope would never get to see her home ever again. King Sombra truly had the last laugh...
That was until he escaped, however! Over a thousand years of nothing but madness and loneliness, he managed to escape from his prison and returned to take back his empire! A lot has happened while he was in isolation, and new ponies took up residence in his empire. He surrounded the kingdom and managed to break through the barriers placed in his way. The only way he could be stopped was if somepony used the Crystal Heart against him. He sought all his efforts into reclaiming the Crystal Heart, and was close too, only a small Dragon welp got in his way and snatched it from under him! He was destroyed, and shattered into a million little pieces.
For the next few years his spirit lingered in the shadows, haunting the ponies of the Crystal Empire. Slowly, he started to gather all the pieces of himself and sneak them into the Crystal Palace to ensure that he would get the heart as soon as he restored himself.
5 year summary
Somepony beat him to it, however, and he found himself fully restored by an outside power. It seems an alliance of like-minded ponies seeking world-domination had brought him back to aid in their plot. They offered him the Crystal Empire, in exchange for his loyalty. His loyalty, however, wasn't an option, seeing as the one who brought him back had put a childish 'loyalty curse' on him, assuming it would keep him in line. The loyalty-curse rubbed Sombra the wrong way, and he knew at some point or another, he would obliterate that stallion which put it on him. The newly revived King Sombra hardly took a step before a large, bug mare offered him a newer, more intimate alliance; one without loyalty curses. She also pointed out that he would be cut out of the Crystal Empire by the alliance of like-minded ponies once he did his job, which made it easier to chose a side.
More-so out of spite, King Sombra chose the Bug mare and fired a powerful blast of black energy at the 'leader' of the group the moment his back was turned to him. The blast turned the leader to ash, and the loyalty curse killed Sombra -- for a moment. Being a living Shadow, only the Lightest and purest of the magics could destroy him, and only for a time. He instantly brought himself back - free of the curse - and joined himself fully to the Bug mare's cause, only on his conditions, of coure. King Sombra also accidentally neglected to tell her about his powerful army of Umbrum soldiers awaiting his arrival underneath the Crystal Empire...
The time came for King Sombra to lead the pathetic army he was given and take the Crystal Empire. The Bug mare already took the Crystal Heart, so the king of Shadows had little to fear. He lead the assault, and killed hundreds of ponies merely for sport. He captured the castle castle within hours, then tricked Princess Cadance into lowering her guard by telling her he wished to defect from Chrysalis and aid her. Of course it was mostly a ruse, and it wasn't actually Sombra talking to her. He snuck around so her back was to him, and he took the moment to turn her into a crystal statue, just like the last princess of the Crystal Empire. He shattered her into pieces, stuffed those pieces into a sack, then crystallized a psychotic killer locked in the Crystal Empire dungeons, shattered him into pieces, and put them in sack as well; so that if he was ever defeated and Princess Cadance was put back together, he would still have the last laugh as both ponies would most-likely be fused into one.
He reclaimed his title as King of the Crystal Empire and enslaved the populace again. He had a hole cut out in his throne and put the sack containing the killer & Cadance in it, then filled it with cement. King Sombra installed a pipe-line leading from the sack to outside the throne and even one into the torture-dungeon; insuring that Cadance would be able to hear every public decision he makes, every one of her citizens he tortures & executes, wishing to make her existence a living-hell. It felt good...
Once his army of Umbrum soldiers were unearthed, King Sombra freed most of the slaves and allowed them to return to the Crystal Empire under the condition that they remain loyal. Then he turned the underground chamber into a large prison. His empire is now thriving with a legion of shadow-ponies keeping the piece, all as tough as King Sombra himself, and he's growing ever so bored with the peace between him and Chrysalis...
