Name: Stark Alenii [Al-en-e]
Nickname: The Old Steed, Commander, Sultan, Big Locust.
Age: 66
Gender: Male
Species: Saddle Arabian, Earth Pony
Place of Birth: A town south of Alowa
Occupation: Mercenary commander
Allegiance: None, only to his mercenary group: The Last Locust
Relationship Status: Widowed and not looking.
Mane: Black with several strands of white, cut short in a buzz-cut.
Eyes: Missing his left eye, his right one is brown.
Living Relatives: Son: Halberd Alenii, younger brother: Key Alenii
General Description: Tall, thick, and old. Stark's coat is the classic Saddle-Arabian tan, with patches of fur missing all along his body from poorly treated wounds that formed scars. He has a long snout that's been broken countless times, and is misshapen along the ridge. He's missing one eye, and covers it with a black leather eye-patch. He's taller than most Equestrian ponies, and is built thick with muscle. He's starting to grow old, and it mostly shows in his face with wrinkles and in his hair.
Skills: Fighting, getting others to fight with him, and training them how to, in the nut-shell. Serving a total of 33 years in the Saddle Arabian military, Stark has become a superb fighter, and an excellent commander. If he trots into a town with 40 bits, he'll leave with six young ponies to add to his mercenary group. Stark's talent is training others for combat, and with 14 of his years in the Saddle Arabian military being a boot-camp-instructor, this is by far his strongest skill. The last 9 years of his service was as a general, where he's learned quite a bit about battle strategy and tactics. The last 10 years he spent renegade, commanding an army of militant fighters, which gave him plenty of experience in guerrilla-warfare and running an entire army of ponies financially.
Faults: The years haven't been kind to Stark. His body is slowly starting to decline, along with his stamina. In a mosh-pit of ponies fighting ponies, he's a force to be reckoned with, but in a one-on-one battle, it would be difficult - yet still it would still be possible - to defeat him if you can dodge him for long enough. Stark has adjusted his fighting style to work with his aging body, as he is very aggressive in battle, and tends to put a lot of force in his swings, which tends to tire him out even faster. His blows are often savage enough to cut off a limb or deliver a fatal blow in a single swing, however he only attacks in swings, he never lunges or stabs with a sword. He couldn't care less about anyone who isn't in The Last Locust, and only takes prisoners if he knows they can be sold at a high-price. Stark cares deeply for the ponies that make up his group, and tends to act emotional if they're killed. He's also ambitious to a fault, wishing to make a name for himself and his group, and his future goals are to establish a sovereign nation for himself and his men.
Equipment: Oh his own person, Stark wears Saddle-Arabian scale-plate armor with leather pants and a leather long-sleeved coat underneath. He doesn't wear a helmet, however he does always wear a Falacion and dagger at his belt. Sometimes - depending on the situation - he will either wear a small brown purse filled with sand, or with bits. He likes to travel light, and have his men carry any important items or good loot.
History: (This history has been approved by the admin of Saddle Arabia: Jordan.) Stark and his brother Key were both born into a peasant settlement south of the Saddle Arabian capital, Alowa. Because the town was alongside the main-road to the capital, it got plenty of visitors and had good business. Throughout his childhood, Stark was charismatic and very in-tune with his surroundings; always beating his brother when they sword-played, jumping from roof to roof, sneaking up on others, he was a very alive and active foal. His father was a retired soldier, and expected his children to fight as well, so he taught them the basics of sword play, to introduce them to it.
Stark was very popular with the other foals in his town, and eventually he formed a gang with his friends called The Thin Mice. In time other smaller gangs formed, but eventually The Thin Mice grew and grew until every kid was a member. It was all in good fun, of course, however when they all aged, things became far more serious.
The nation of Saddle Arabia was not the safest place on earth; bandits were a common issue for many towns, and as Stark grew up, the prevalence of bandits grew stronger in his mind. At around the age of 15, Stark started teaching his gang the basics of sword-play, and trained with them to sharpen their skills. Eventually, a band of bandits did show up to Starks town, and set up shop there to raid on passing caravans. The bandits were there for only two days, before late at night Stark and his gang sprung an attack on the bandits and successfully drove them out of town. The young mares & stallions were novice fighters, but under Stark's command and with his support in-battle, he was victorious. When the last bandit left, Stark noticed his cutiemark formed: a set of wooden-swords atop one another under a steel-sword.
Word had already gotten out that bandits were set up at Stark's town, and a team of soldiers were dispensed to go deal with them. When the soldiers got there, they were surprised to find that somepony beat them to it. Stark and his father explained to the soldiers what happened, and the soldiers were impressed. They offered to take Stark back to Alowa, and enroll him into the Saddle Arabian Military. Stark's father's father's father was a great war-hero, and Stark's father's father was a general. Stark's father was only a mere soldier, and so he wanted Stark to bring back glory for the Alenii name. Stark went back with the soldiers, and went through the brutal courses of Saddle Arabian Boot-camp.
The Military training only took about 3 months, however those few months were utterly life-changing for him. He was a soldier, he was a link in a great strong chain known as the Saddle Arabian Infantry Division. He wanted nothing more than to make others feel this kind of pride as well, and to teach them how to stand up for themselves, however there was work to be done, and he would have to prove himself before he could do what he really wants. Stark felt a strong pride, being in the Saddle Arabian Infantry; Saddle Arabia was in the middle of a gruesome war with a neighboring kingdom, and it needed soldiers now more than ever. Stark was sent out far across the kingdom to fight and combat the enemy militants, which he did for several years. His performance was so good, in fact, that he was nominated to join the Officer Corps by his superiors.
Stark gladly chose to have a career in the Saddle Arabian Army, and ventured back to Alowa to join the OCS (Officer Candidate School). For the following few months, Stark learned everything he needed to know to become an officer, and he excelled in his studies. Only the top members of the class were honored with the opportunity of job of Drill-Sargent - by far the most demanding and difficult job in the entire military -and yet Stark was offered the job, which he gladly took. He was sent out on the boarders of enemy territory to a military base. There, he trained raw recruits and made them battle-ready soldiers in a few short months. The war had ended, and the neighboring nation signed a peace treaty. For 14 sweet years, there was peace, however Stark kept getting recruits, and the Saddle Arabian Army was ready for the next threat to show itself when it did. Stark had officially earned his dream, and the next 14 years would be the happiest years of his life.
Unfortunately, during the 15th year of peace, a civil war broke out, and the base Stark was located in was on the wrong side of Saddle Arabia. The base was surrounded by militants, and took assault after assault. There were heavy casualties, including the leading officers, leaving only him in charge. He was the acting CO for 4 months - on the 5th month is when help arrived to bring them out of there - but because of his bravery during those 4 tough months, he was promoted and made a General.
As a General, Stark felt out of place, and knew from his training at OCS that he could not be as personal with his men as a Drill-Sargent was. Though, he did feel purpose in ensuring that he lost as few men as he could. During the civil war, General Stark helped lead a campaign against the rebelling ponies, and gave a significant contribution to the war effort, shortening a 12 year war to 6 years. He lost only a few minor battles, and kept his ranking of General even after the 6 year war. The rebels were crushed, and there were 3 more years of peace, however peace is only meant to be broken.
Reports of towns going silent and smoke being seen over the distant horizon started to reach General Stark's desk. In less than 2 months time, it was official, a large-scale Slave Rebellion had begun, and was gaining new ground by the second. The militant group was nicknamed The Locus, because of how fast they moved and in such strength. General Stark knew that he would lose men crushing this rebellion, however he felt safe in the thought that he trained most of the men he will be sent out with. Him and a large legion of soldiers were ordered to crush The Locust before they grew too strong, and aid any Saddle Arabian Army forces they come across.
Slavery was a part of Saddle Arabian culture. Stark had grown up with it, and was an abed supporter of it. Saddle Arabia was very strict in the way it treated slave-owners. The Sultan was no King Sombra, he ensured that every slave was treated fairly and kindly. He was known for sending out groups of soldiers to check up on slave-masters, but Saddle Arabia is a large kingdom, and full of liars. There are several places at the far ends of Saddle Arabia where slaves are treated like cattle, and are beaten mercilessly. It was no shock that eventually they would revolt, and revolt they did; they successfully overthrew their masters, butchered them, and claimed their land. After they freed themselves, the former-slaves moved to nearby settlements and towns to kill the masters there too. They had brutal tactics, and learned little of mercy from their former masters.
General Stark was sent to kill the slaves and put the masters back in power. The first town that General Stark sought to reclaim was named Yevin. This first move was vital to General Stark's success; he needed to quietly eliminate The Locust there and hold the position. They would then wait for more Locust to come, then deal with them as well. It was very likely that the heads of the revolt would come through Yevin if they believed it was theirs, so General Stark took his best men and personally went into the town himself.
Once inside the town, General Stark started to feel strange. He saw the Locust that his men killed as they made their way to the center of town silently; they didn't look like fierce foreign militants, or battle hardened ponies trying to grab for power -- they looked innocent, like they were just trying to survive, like they wanted to live a life free of chains and masters. He saw a young mare holding a scythe, watching for intruders. He signaled for his soldiers to hold, and went ahead himself. He grabbed the mare by the throat and choked her hard enough to ensure that she wouldn't make any noise. He talked to her, and told her that if she shouted, he would kill her. She remained silent, and they talked. A lot. They talked for so long, in fact, that one of the soldiers came to check up on him, and found them --- doing unprofessional things.
The mare was named Rice-Rat because she worked for a farmer-master - farming rice - and she was caught by the master eating some of the rice. She had convinced General Stark that the slaves deserved freedom, and The Locust were ponies just as much as anypony else! She explained to him how things work in Equestira, and for some reason the morals just clicked with him. Once he was convinced -- things got oddly heated between the two. He explained to the soldiers that he brought with him that he was going to desert the army and help The Locust. He was still strong, and felt confident enough to take them in a sword-match if they tried to kill him, however instead they asked him why. With the help of Rice-Rat, General Stark was able to convince his men - who were already personally loyal to General Stark - to join him in aiding The Locust. General Stark was pretty convincing, and not a single pony in his small group said no.
Later the next morning morning, Stark, his small party of men, and 200 Locust marched on General Stark's military camp just outside the town. The Locust didn't play any kind of marching music to indicate that they were charging, and a pony was sent ahead telling them that General Stark was returning. When the two armies met, Stark gave a long, heartfelt speech to his soldiers, and convinced 90% of them to desert The Saddle Arabian army as well. The remaining 10% were allowed to leave alive on the condition that they would tell the Sultan that General Stark was killed, along with the majority of their forces.
Stark was made second in command to The Locust war-effort after that, and married Rice-Rat. With around 5,000 hardened Saddle Arabian soldiers, and Stark training The Locust how to fight, they were able to fight for 9 long years, freeing nearly 1/3rd of Saddle Arabia and setting out for more. Stark had a son during this war, and named him Halberd Alenii. Victory seemed more than possible, and with a son, Stark wanted nothing more than to ensure he had a bright, a free future. However, over the course of 1 week, nearly 80% of Stark's Locust-soldiers were killed, along with freed slaves and their families. General Stark was nearly killed himself, taking a nasty arrow to the side of the head and costing him an eye. Somepony betrayed him, and told the Saddle Arabian Army all the towns they were occupied in, their usual guard-schedules, when they would be on the road, everything.
This was a coordinated and informed assault, he knew.
Wounded, betrayed, and on the now losing side of a war, he had only 1,000 soldiers left, and had nothing in mind but his son, and revenge. His wife, Rice-Rat, was contacted by a Saddle Arabian Spy, and offered both lands and official freedom if she handed over information on The Locust. For some undetermined reason, she followed up on the Spy's offer, and was taken away, with her son. Stark attempted to push The Locust forces forward towards the capital with what little he had left, but it wasn't enough.
With only 30 original soldiers, and less than 200 Locust, Stark set out to find his wife and son. After a month of searching, he found them hidden in a small farming-village called Algu. Stark was so furious when she confessed to him, that he killed her on the spot, not realizing that his son was in the room. Halberd fled and managed to allude Stark and his forces. After the events in Algu, he officially gave up on the fight, and convinced his 230 men to leave Saddle Arabia and flee for Equestria. Only Stark, 10 of his soldiers, and 40 of his Locust made it all the way to Equestria alive. It took two years for them to fully meet, and what they found shocked them.
