[Enter Genesee from the Tunnels]
Genesee lead Flux to the front make-shift door of the Armory where two guards were positioned. They nodded and voiced a greeting to the leader, giving Flux a weary look. Genesee saw their hesitation and confirmed the validity of his presence. "He's with me today. He may enter as well for today only." The guards gave a single nod and stepped aside.

[Enter Flux from the Tunnels]
Flux's brow had furrowed at their leader's words and the more he heard the more he realized that even the things he knew of that went on under the radar here in camp were only at the tip of the iceberg. The determined way Genesee walked, looking around to ensure that they weren't being tailed, and his tone all combined gave him a new appreciation for the secrets the elder must have held. He'd never been in this part of the camp before, never having reason to or curiosity strong enough to break the rules and sneak his way in there, and the hesitant way that the guards reacted to him told him more than enough about the usual traffic in this area.
"Genesee...what is this? What's back here?" he asked warily, his instincts screaming at him to be ready for an ambush. Pushing his reactions down with the knowledge that they were in a safe place, he followed behind the earth pony. Something comparable to the outside world, if he was to be believed. That could be something very good, or very bad...

Ignoring Flux's questions for now, Genesee pushed the door aside and trotted into the dim, candle lit cavern. Light from the mirror system was a hard thing to get to reach in this corner of the cave, so it had been set aside for long term storage. Though it was known as the armory, most camp ponies only thought it to be a place to store weapons brought in by refugees. Common things like swords, knives, arrows and their bows, as well as armor were typically what anypony could assume would be kept back here, possibly even the occasional enchanted object. However, what Flux saw before him as his eyes adjusted to the dim light was beyond what he or any other camper could have assumed.
For one, the room was incredibly large. Its ceiling was far larger than any of the other cave's. And it needed it.
In the center of the room, three enormous wooden structures with scaffolding around them stood erect high into the cave. It was obvious they were each a project in the works, but the one on the furthest end seemed to be the most complete. A quick glance would tell Flux it was a hybrid between a catapult for its top, and what looked to be the barrel of an enormous cannon at it's base. There were 6 ponies in the cavern, all working away and shouting orders to others as they all worked on lifting a new wooden rod high into the air toward the top of the middle machine. None had noticed their entrance, or at least none seemed to care.
Genesee stopped and paused to let Flux take it in, his own eyes locked on the ponies as they lifted a new piece of his plan into place. "I wouldn't leave my campers defenseless to a foe with weapons of their own. However... If some campers knew we had these defense weapons in the making, they wouldn't see them as simply our defense, they would see it as a means to march into war with these at their sides."

Unsure of what he should have been expecting down here, the sounds of construction were far from his guesses. He followed with ears perked and eyes wary, and his face openly showed his surprise when they entered into the enormous cavern in the presence of the large machines. These were a concept as old as war itself, and to see not one, but three of them being built in New Hayven was something he wouldn't have expected in his wildest dreams. What the elder said was true, that if knowledge of these was spread through the camp there would be perhaps not so small of a group that would say to push out from the mountain, and Flux could think of several ponies who would likely back the idea off the top of his head. His eyes scanned the structures carefully, making sure that his face did not give Genesee reason to suspect that Flux had any desire to use them in the way that he described. In fact, he truly did not, but to give any sign that his allegiance was not to the camp could prove disastrous.
After a few long moments to process what he'd seen, he shook his head and uttered a soft chuckle that grew to a laugh he quickly reigned in, the tension between him and those around him gone as the secrecy was unveiled. "Genesee, you are the only pony I know who could manage to build anything like this in secret, much less three of them. I must say they're strikingly similar in structure to some I've seen in the further north; who designed them? And does anyone else here know? I can certainly understand now why the idea of defense doesn't bring much issue to you."

Genesee chuckled lightly back, his eyes trained on the enormous beam now being lifted to follow the rod into place on the structure. "You'd be surprised what a rag-tag team of ponies with various backgrounds can design~ Many ponies who came into this camp were normal city ponies with humble trades such as craftsmen, boutique owners, and chefs, but there were many ponies from the princesses' forces. Trained and skilled with crafting innovative ideas, they were some of the leaders that brought modern weaponry to Celestia's guard. We have three of her finest among our ranks, and they've kept their pasts quiet out of pure fear of being discovered by the new forces. Their minds are something Nightmare Moon would surely poses and take advantage of... they know it, and they've seen what she's capable of."
His gaze turned to look at two older earth stallions with greying hair, bodies a rusty red and the other a deep turquoise, their heads bent over a table with what looked to be large sheets of parchment with notes and drawings littered across it. They both wore distinguishing aprons of a dark red color, something recognizable as a piece from Celestia's workforce. Not far above them, an older grey-blue pegasus mare flew with the same tattered apron. Flux might recognize them from around camp as just another pair of tired and saddened elders in camp, but here they seemed strong, full of life and passion, with a determined look in their eyes. "They designed them, for us, for our defense, not for war. Their team of workers now all believe in the same thing as they do, and so do I."

It was certainly shocking to see a completely different side of ponies he recognized that otherwise didn't appear to warrant a second glance out in the tunnels or gathering areas, though with his own background he shouldn't have been surprised that there were some things that ponies didn't make known in their current situation. Seeing all the work that had been done already made him feel like some of his earlier worries were almost silly. "I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering how varied the pasts of some of these ponies are," he mused out loud, studying the architecture of the structures for a few seconds before turning back to their leader. "This is most certainly the base of firepower, but a lot of where my concern lies in the ability to operate it. It's only a relatively low percentage of those who live here who have shown that they can keep their head calm under pressure. Learning what they can from the classes is good, but that's a controlled situation where no one is in any real harm. Having the knowledge without the confidence to use it isn't helpful. If you trust the level of preparation that's been made, I'll defer to your judgement. But these ponies," he said with a gesture towards the workers in the cave, "your daughter, Forte, Aegis, ponies that feel more able to use their abilities if called on, I fear aren't a big enough force to ward off a real threat by themselves."

Genesee turned to Flux and listened intently, he understood the pegasus' concerns, but he wasn't sure if this pony had been in camp long enough to really know just how trained some of the camp ponies were. He had hoped showing him that he wasn't banning all military weaponry advancements for the camp in truth would give him confidence, but it seemed to have made the stallion even more set on saying they were not prepared. It both worried him and frustrated him that this traveled stallion still considered them ill prepared. "Flux, you need to remember that our primary goal is to stay hidden for as long as possible. It might never come to a battle before things settle out in the world."
The old leader began to trot towards the far side of the armory, strolling by the working crews around each construction zone before they came to the storage area of the cave. It housed every weapon that had been brought in by refugees or salvaged from across the land by patrols. Many were organized for use in defense classes, as Flux might recognize some of the items being used in classes he had attended. Genesee did his best to try to make Flux see how much the camp had taken into consideration, "However, even if we do face a battle, our training programs teach defenses, and some of the ponies who work in here are even training classes of their own that teach large weaponry handling. Its our plan to slowly phase ponies in those courses into knowledge of these in order to be trained, select ponies who can be trusted. We only need a hoofful of ponies to even operate these the way they will be built. Every other pony has defense training in this cave, training that has been perfected over the years, what more could we offer in all reality?"

Flux stood for a moment of thought as Genesee began to walk, shaking his head gently before following. He had never had the privilege of seeing the collection of weapon items that were turned in from incoming ponies, and as his eyes slid over the various tools he found himself trying to match them with ponies he knew around the camp; who had brought in what. There were, of course, weapons that some individuals were cleared to keep with them, such as himself and his wingblades. He listened to the words being spoken to him, but he knew that he'd already learned everything he needed to or would and it would progress nothing to push on and spark an argument. Filing the information useful to his idea away, he focused his mind solely on Genesee and what they were talking about currently. The pegasus had learned early never to give any reason for doubt of intent, and his months in these caves weren't going to make him forget that.
He sighed softly as he thought about the conversational corner he'd backed the elder into, and from his perspective it seemed like Flux was asking for everyone to give more when those who had anything at all to give had sacrificed it to the good of the camp long ago. "You're right," he admitted as he considered just how much had already gone into the building of these machines, and in the small armory that had been established. "I suppose among those that have already devoted themselves to the name of defense there are just as many who simply can't for one reason or another."
Squaring himself to their leader and locking his gaze to the green one that reminded him of Moxie, the thought struck him that perhaps he would be seeing it again soon for another entirely unrelated reason. His voice was calm and intentional. "Maybe it's unfair to ask this so directly, but I want to know what the impression I've given myself these past few months is. Do you trust me to live with the best interest of this camp and its inhabitants strong in my mind? I have no ill will towards anyone here and would only like to see their future ensured, I hope the same way you do."

Genesee regarded the blue stallion with gentle respect, smiling softly with a light nod. "What impression you've given? Well... I see a lot of my younger self in you, to speak truthfully." The old stallion smiled more as he remembered back to his more spirited self, before the world had made him face hard decisions, and withstand pain he had never imagined could be felt so sharply within his heart.
Genesee looked back to Flux with a new air about him, almost hesitant, as if he was being cautious with the amount of trust he had so easily given the young stallion after such a short amount of time. But he had a gut feeling in this colt... that he knew they shared a similar vision in the long run, and Genesee needed all the ponies he could get to be on his side right now. "I know you want what's best for the ones you care about. This is a large part of the reason why I wanted to show you this... Maybe I don't always have the right answers in the long run, but i do try to make the right decisions in the moment as unselfishly as I possibly can. At least... I hope I do." His ears fell only slightly, it was a vulnerable subject for the leader, but he tried not to show it to almost all ponies. A weakness in a leader was seen as a death sentence to some in times of war.
He went on, "I try to remain unbiased, try to see all sides, but I can't deny I have stronger bonds with some ponies than others. I try to make a point to be equal in my decisions and requirements of every pony in camp, but sometimes.... maybe I am hardest on the ones dear to me. It's tricky being a leader Flux. One day, you may very well come across these same dilemmas, so it's important to pick a side wisely and never falter even when challenges hit home heavy in the heart. Sometimes tough decisions simply HAVE to be made..."

He stood silent and listened intently to every word that was spoken by the elder, taking it in and trying as best he could to see from Genesee's point of view. In truth, the older stallion had many years of experience on Flux and the that was something that the latter would always respect, but even though they both seemed to share the same future goal for the camp and its members it was clear that they both had different ideas in how to achieve that goal. The wizened words showed a side of their leader that he'd never seen before, and through his words it occurred to Flux that Genesee didn't act so harsh as a reflection of his heart but because that was the best way to ensure the safety of all the ponies who counted on him. For a moment he tried to think of what he would do were he in Genesee's horseshoes, but with the amount of responsibility that the earth pony carried in secret it was impossible to be sure about.
"You do well," he finally said after a respectful silence. "Ponies here are free to live in a way that likely would be impossible elsewhere, and it's all because of you. Even if it's unsaid by most, I think I speak for everyone who can wake up knowing that their lives aren't in imminent danger when I say thank you, both for us who are here now and those who aren't anymore." He sighed and let his gaze wander over the cavern again. "I just worry, maybe unnecessarily so. Every time I walk into a room I can't help but see how many ponies would be vulnerable, and to make sure there are others around who could help if needed. You know how long I spent moving around from place to place; now that I'm here I've made real friends, your daughter among the best of them. She's even a big part of the reason I'm still here," he admitted, watching Genesee in his peripheral vision for any reaction to his statement.

The small hint of a confession didn't surprised the old stallion. He was young once, full of love and passion for a yellow mare with hair that sparkled like the stars and eyes that had captivated his heart. The same eyes Moxie had. Sometimes it took him by surprise when Moxie looked at him, for fleeting moments he could see that mare again before his daughter's brown mane brought him back to the present. The idea of a stallion having feelings for his daughter did make him wary, but she wasn't a foal, and Genesee had seen the respect Flux continued to show for her enough to trust he meant her well. "That's one of the reasons I've brought you here today to show you this. Flux, you care about her safety, right? You care about every pony in this camp's safety, correct? If it came down to it, do you care enough about her and their safety enough to make a decision that might cost you their love and respect for some time?"

Looking to each other with an indecisive gaze about them, the guards remained in position. Senior member or not, this door was severely guarded with little access upon Genesee's orders. "With all do respect sir, no can do!" Hating to deny their battle instructor, this room held more dangers for the camp then the ponies within.
Looking into the eyes of Forte Fermata, one guard in particular had offered a low defeated sigh. Trained by the green stallion before him along with his partner himself, shifting eyes turned to his adversary. "It is an emergency.. Genesee migh-"
"No." Firm on his orders, the guard next to him had not budged for a second. Cutting off his partners speech with a blank expression, he remained vigilant. "You must have Genesee's permission to enter. You do not, therefore the answer is no."

Flux would have immediately answered the older stallion's first question in the affirmative; he tried as hard as he could to look after Moxie's well-being whenever they were together and especially when they were out on patrols or exploring new parts of the caves. However, respect held his tongue back until Genesee had finished speaking. Hearing the rest of the thought proved his decision wise, and the question posed to him made him take pause and truly consider the weight of the words.
Of course he cared for the safety of camp members in general. Many of them had lost everything before finding the camp and the new friends that they had made were all that they could hold onto. Flux himself stubbornly refused to give up on the hope that he would find the remnants of his family, but he personally knew others that had accepted everything to be gone, snatched away from them in a war they didn't ask for. Keeping the camp together and safe always had to be the top priority in any action taken by its members.
However, thinking of Moxie always placed her into a context of her own. The stallion would certainly do as much as he could if it meant ensuring that she was out of harm's way, or as well-protected as could be if she was. He hated to admit it to himself, but he couldn't think of any situation where he wouln't place her importance above the other ponies', despite trying to keep as fair a view as possible. This train of thought was also the one that made him realize that if he were really going to be as honest and true to himself as he tried to be, he needed to talk to Moxie soon.
And then he thought of all the times where he'd helped her or she'd helped him, their friendship quickly growing stronger over the time he'd spent here just...gone... Images flashed through his mind of her back being turned on him, of her sparkling eyes filled with pain and directed at him alone, reaching out to her only to be brushed to the side. It left an uncomfortable lump in his throat; merely thinking of it was enough to fill him with sadness. But whatever Genesee meant, if making a choice that left her unhappy for now but alive later...
"Yes...I do. I really do," he said firmly as he looked back up to the elder. "With all due respect, your daughter is special to me, and if her disliking me was what it took for me to know that she would be safe in the future, a future where maybe more is revealed to her and she could understand why it had been done, then there's nothing I wouldn't do for her. The rest of the camp too," he added. "But...what could do that?"

Glaring at his partner with eyes that could silence any rookie, the stronger willed of the two had simply returned to his position. Clearing his throat, the stallion remained professional, this wasn't his place to open any door. His job was simple, keep the doors closed at all times, and that he was going to do. Permanently silencing his adversary and shaking his head, crimson eyes looked deeply into Forte's own. "Your teachings have taught us well over the years. You will always remain skilled and strong, you do not need weapons to prove that. Forgive us, but the answer is still no. You will not get through this door. Every second you waste here, the situation continues to escalate. Use what you have taught us. Weapons can be a crutch, and you sir need no such thing. Now go, prove to us your lessons work just the same for you."

Watching him closely, Genesee's eyes hardened and his voice grew grave, "War, does that Flux. War changes every pony, and how they think of others. Especially the ones who bring it about..."
Sighing, he knew he'd need to explain himself for Flux to fully understand what he meant. Rubbing at his temples, he hoped he had placed his trust in the right pony, an honest pony, an unselfish one...
"I need to ask alot of you Flux. You've been out in the world recently, and you've been through more enemy camps than any other refugee here, that includes patrols. You've got proven talent for stealth, and for getting out of tricky situations if it came to it. Of any pony in camp, this mission needs to go to you."
Genesee paused and gestured to the armory around them, filled with weapons from around Equestria of many sizes, and of course, the behemoth creations being made within it. "For all of our weapons, we've no way of knowing if this will be enough if it came to an attack on camp. I never want that to happen... what I want to know, so I can make that never come to pass, is if we have enough to pose smart, tactical attacks and win. Flux, I want to ask you to go out into the world again, and find out just how strong the enemy is, what we would need to build to have any chance of attacking the enemy first. Not directly... but by enemy camp. By taken city. Slowly. Enough to cripple, before we retreat and cover our tracks for the next phase. The enemy can never trace us back home. If you found out what the degree of weapons each enemy controlled city had, and were able to help us pin point where we should attack and what strength we would need to be to win, that would give us the upper hoof to make this plan a reality. We may not have the numbers in ponies, but if we attack smart, catch them off guard, we can do a world of lasting damage."
He put a hoof on flux's shoulder, looking at him seriously. "This could very well start another war Flux, if it causes a spark in the nation... and we would be the ones pushing it forward. Moxie, and many other ponies in this camp, have been hurt terribly by war. Some may want another to start, to fight back, but when it truly came to it again?... many will waiver. Moxie's heart steps in far before her mind does when things get hard, she's no different than many ponies here. War means death. War means destruction and devastation. And when all that comes knocking at the door again when it had only just settled down? Would you willingly let it in so easily?
If ponies knew a move like this was coming... we'd have too many reactions to try to handle, from panic, to anger, to war-lusting ponies who want to go out before we're ready. Which is why you cannot tell any pony of the mission I'm asking of you whether you accept it or not... do you understand?"

Staring back into Genesee's eyes, Flux couldn't help but hesitate. To anyone else it would look like he was simply wrapping his head around the magnitude of what was being asked of him, but internally his thoughts were racing. Could he have known? The pegasus had thought long and hard about secretly organizing other ponies that were inclined to the greater good and doing much the same thing as Genesee now suggested; could this be some sort of trap? He hadn't even mentioned the prospect to anyone else...he had to trust that this was genuine and not simply bait to weed out anyone with such intentions. Additionally, as the elder spoke on Flux realized that the sacrifices he had described were ones that he'd made personally, taking the ire of Moxie in order to ensure that everyone was safe. This old stallion deserved much more respect than many ponies would ever know.
Really considering what such a task would require, he weighed acceptance in his mind. "I would like to," he said honestly. "But that's something that would take time outside, and considering that ponies live here knowing that they can't simply come and go as they please would certainly raise questions if I suddenly disappear for several weeks at a time and then show up again as if nothing has changed. I go on perimeter patrols but that's different, ponies expect that. If you can ensure that this won't cause problems here for you, I'm in."
He felt the barest trails of excitement at the prospect of getting back outside to do good, held back only by the thought that he might garner the anger of someone he cared about. However, one thought nagged in his mind. "I...do have a request, though," he said nervously, not wanting at all to come across as ungrateful for the respect between them. "I trust you,Genesee, and you can rest assured that my discretion won't have this spread. But I've done more than my share of field work as I traveled, and I rarely went alone. Anything with a fair amount of risk involved like this, having a partner to work with is better and safer. If you'd allow it, I'd like to ask someone to come with me. Someone I trust, obviously, both if they accepted to watch my back, and if not to not say anything." A few moments of thought passed and he spoke again. "Pumpkin Vine would be a good candidate. We do patrols together. She's a friend and an able body if it comes to fighting, and smart enough not to talk about this if she wouldn't want to go." He hoped that he hadn't overturned Genesee's plan, but also hoped that he wouldn't suddenly disappear if he were to follow it.

Genesee took a long moment to consider Flux's request, torn internally out of his caution and reluctance to release such sensitive information to more than the ponies he had to. However, the old stallion knew there was safety in numbers, and less chance of irrational moves without somepony having the sense to be in the right state of mind when making decisions. Eventually, he nodded, understanding the need to venture out in pairs.
"If you trust her, then take Pumpkin Vine. But you must promise not to explain the mission until you are well out of camp. Tell her you are going on a recovery mission for a group of ponies said to be wandering the mountains, and I will tell the camp the same. That should give you plenty of time without suspicion internally. When you return, report to me immediately, we will figure out your cover with camp members if still needed by then..."
Giving a husky sigh at the notion of having to be so secretive about things when he wished it wasn't necessary, Genesee gave Flux a tired reassuring smile. "I've no doubt that you will do well with this task. You're putting knowledge back on our side with the intel you collect."
Looking to the side briefly, as if searching for something, Genesee took a few paces over to pull out a satchel heavy with the weight of some unseen items. "I packed this for you in hopes you would accept. It should give you everything you need for stealth in camps and roughing it in the woods for a solid two months, but with Pumpkin it'll last one. Even so, be smart and refill supplies when you possibly can and you should last longer. We still have a few friendlies out there in the woods, they keep a burn mark of a twilight star tucked above their doors - seek it out and make the most of their hospitality when needed."
The commotion at the door echoed deep into the armory, making Genesee feel his edginess resurfacing. He couldn't be seen in here... He would have to go out the back. With a brisk nod, Genesee concluded, "I need to exit unseen...through the back..." Tilting his head toward the door, he asked with a half smile, "Mind ensuring campers don't wander in here on your way out?"

At this point Flux was outright eager to take up the mantle set before him. It was shaping up to be close to the life he'd led with Ranger, filled with adventure and excitement. The weight of what he was being asked to do was not lost on him though, and he fully realized that this was of great importance. But there was no reason he couldn't enjoy doing it. His gaze passed over the satchel, curious about what would be inside but knowing that if Genesee had prepared it with this task in mind that there would be many valuable items inside.
He took in all of the information given to him and committed it to his memory. "As you see fit," he nodded in response to the exit plan. "Thank you, Genesee." Not only was his thanks for being trusted with this task, but if Flux were being completely honest he had begun to feel like a sort of prisoner in the camp. Regular patrols were only a way to get outside for a little while and stave off the feeling of being trapped and useless, but this would truly let him be free, at least for a while. He picked up the satchel and hefted it onto his back with a slight grunt, using his wings to ensure that it didn't fall. With one last nod to the elder he began to backtrack out towards the exit.

Rounding the last curve in the stone tunnel revealed the armory's entrance and the ponies whose voices had echoed further down; Forte and the two guards. Genesee hadn't wanted to be seen in there, and Flux decided that it would be best to avoid saying that he was there either. He kept his calm exterior and continued moving with direction; he hoped he wouldn't be stopped by questions and could track down Pumpkin Vine immediately.
