Archimedes stood at the ready, both to bolt and to intervene. He saw the exit, eyed it wantingly. It would be so easy. Just to slip out, unnoticed. There was already a distraction.
But then his eyes gazed over the crowd, fanning out over familiar faces. Faces he had spent the last two years getting to know. He felt...something...His gaze finally rested thoughtfully on Pumpkin.
"How long have you known me, Amazon?" He asked suddenly.

Deut followed the dragon over to the gathering of equine creatures. The powerful zebra stood before him was an imposing figure, intimidating and massive. Deut chewed feverishly on his bark, hoping that he could manage to work this out...
"Akumat.. Duna manobu?" he replied, almost hesitantly. (I speak it... What is the problem?)

The male zebra blinked in surprise for a moment, scarcely believing that the small unicorn had spoken the correct words to him. Taking a moment to look the pony over in new light of respect, the Zebra went on while his family watched from the sidelines. He went on in his native language, now opening his story once more, his anger suppressed for a final attempt to explain. "These guards took my sick daughter's belongings without asking permission, they ripped her great grandmother's cherished medicine bag and spilled her pain-soothing potion." He pointed back at the guards accusingly, where a pool of potion lay at their hooves.
"My daughter NEEDED that supply for the month, and now we only have half to give her! Where are we to get more in time now before her sickness flares again without leaving camp? Her grandmother wont be here for another moon!" His nostrils flared in frustration. As any foreign race, Deut would know they typically only trusted the medical treatments their own kind trusted. Asking this zebra to rely on the camp's pain medicines would not be easy...

Burnt pupils shifted to the dragon, his kind disposition not what she was used to in such a breed. Remembering her home land, and taming the wild beasts that would lurk in their territory without a clue, it was usually the same for all of those who crossed their borders with foul intent. With a slice of a head, any use for makeshift firewood was better then nothing. Dancing around the exotic flames, the smell of smoke filling the air, oh how she adored it. Smirking to the dragon, Pumpkin was respectful in her response.
"Dragon, I have known you for quite a number of years. Watching you among the common pony, is quite exquisite. You have developed so well among them, and stand out so. I applaud."

Archimedes was shocked. Not that he allowed her to see, that would be cheating. He replied, "Hmmm..." very thoughtfully. He had never really taken too much time to fully develop some of the relationships he saw he had among the crowd of faces. His mind was always planning, scheming how to get out of the nightmare. In truth, he had gotten pretty good at putting on airs and hiding his own thoughts. But now, the outside rapport he had had gained had born fruit in the form of his relationship with Pumpkin, arguably his best friend in the camp.
He thought again about that night and Octavia's screams. He could remember crying and feeling nothing. He felt something die in him that night, something he now felt looking at Pumpkin's stoic, warrior demeanor that now softened into that warm hint of a smile. (Not tryina put actions on yer face, jus assumin')
He could live here, maybe... if he wasn't a murderer. He knew he had to leave now. Maybe someday, he'd be back, but he had to go. He would make his plan anon...
"Thank you, Pumpkin," he replied finally. "You've been a good friend. And-" a blood orange tint colored his cheeks "thank you for giving me that small measure of peace at training. I haven't been without pain in three years. Think you could do that for me again sometime?"

Judging from the large creature's expression, Pumpkin Vine listened intently. Not for his words, but for what the dragon did not say, his hidden vocabulary among the restless. As a warrior, they have learned to over look speech, to identify within another's soul for questions not yet given with a reply. Standing in the company with Archimedes himself through the years, his head had certainly been out there in a matter of sorts. Wishing to ease his mental state, Pumpkin Vine knew that simply being there for the creature was enough, for everyone in this world needed a friend.
"Archimedes, anytime. While these creatures sort things out, would you like to take a walk with me?" (You're good.)
Her heavily accented voice was soft and meaningful, giving him no reason to distrust as dark colored eyes shifted from the scene to him once more. Wishing only to talk, Pumpkin Vine yearned for reasoning's for his sadness. While everyone in here had their reasons for depression, his was locked away, in a metal safe where no one could dare touch it. Perhaps she could lighten him with reassurance, for he needed to vent, that much was clear. Whether this camp knew it or not, they needed this dragon for defensive reasons, and he needed them just the same.
"Sometimes I believe its nice to walk outside of this camp life style, don't you agree?"

Archimedes almost cried. Of course he was inscrutable, but after the morning's events he welcomed not being looked at like a total loon.
He even summoned up the warmest language he could muster, "Yes, that would be nice. We might also recover those stray books while we talk. How about that?"
It suddenly occurred to him that she would have no clue about the books. He explained quickly, "I stole certain volumes for research from the keepsake cavern. It would be best if I returned them now that Genessee knows."
"I stashed them all over the woods in the immediate area," he explained further. He gestured towards the exit and moved in that direction, as if asking her to follow him out.

Deut thought for a few moments. He'd have to pick his words carefully. "First, I do apologise for the guards'... zeal." he began in Zebra tongue. "Second, whilst I'm sure it must be distressing for you and your daughter to have your belongings taken, but you must understand that it is only for a few moments, you'll get it all back very quickly. It's just so we can ensure the camp's security."
As for the medicine, Deut knew this topic would be prickly. Nevertheless, he figured he wouldn't get to the convincing straight off the bat. "As for the medicine bag and potion... Again, we are sorry for the damage caused, and we would be more than happy to provide your daughter with our own potions and medical care as a replacement..."

The Zebra's temper boiled again at this. "Tell your GUARDS to simply ask instead of ripping a being's belongings away from them! For shame that they would be so rough with a sick youngling! We will have no part in your ways, and certainly not your medicine if this is how you treat sickly equines." The Zebra stallion had seen no evidence of a caring pony in the camp yet, and had been soured to the entire idea of staying here. If Deut was to keep them to stay, he had best change their minds with his actions.

Despite her proper ways of life, Pumpkin Vine listened to the dragon's confession with a small and innocent laugh. Pleased to hear not everypony was stiff and upright, the pegasus shook her head at the bad reptile, his mistakes were solvable. Motioning her head for him to follow, Pumpkin made her way further from the distraught scene as burnt orange eyes shifted to Archimedes with a smile.
"Archimedes, how can I keep up with your track record. Let us go find these stolen books, and I'll certainly give you a talking to along the way."
Chuckling softly to ensure him that she wasn't particularly mad about the stolen books, the mare was mainly pleased to see a smile warming on the once dwelling beast. He was special in certain ways she couldnt explain, however he was also still just as mysterious. Leaving blank pages for the stubborn investigators to fill in, Pumpkin Vine's handy exploring of his personality was something she'll never regret. Walking to Celestia's gate, the only entrance to the cave, the amazonian mare trotted forward.

"Uh-oh," he intoned playfully, smirking. Or at least he tried. It came out as a sort of half-meant awkwardness. Even his face felt forced and stone-like. He shook his head to clear it away in vain, then decided to just follow quickly.
[Exit Archimedes as well]

Deut winced. He had to admit, it did seem a bit like the fault of the guard for not properly establishing what was going on before yanking away their belongings... Nevertheless, he formulated a careful reply... "The guard was acting out of order by not making sure you understood..." There was a pause before Deut eventually asked "May I speak with your daughter?"

Huffing a grumble, the male zebra eventually nodded and turned to retrieve his youngest daughter. After a quick word with his wife, the tiny and frail zebra filly stepped forward with her father, looking at the ground bashfully. Once back to Deut, her father gave her a few words of gentle encouragement that stemmed from an old zebra chant, and the young filly slowly looked up to Deut.
"My father said you.... want to speak with me?"

Deut cleared his throat as he prepared to once again choose his words carefully. He figured the best way to deal with this would be to drop the serious and apologetic front he'd used for the father and take things much more directly. "Yes... What's your name?"

"Zeconi..." She zebra filly stared down at her hooves self-consciously. She was thin, frail, and there were shadows under her eyes from her sickness. She had a rare thick stripes that made her stand out from her father, alot like how her mother looked but even thicker, having a very noticable white stripe that reached down from her forehead to the tip of her noes in a broad marking. She could be no more than 6 in age.
Her father stood rigid at her side, just daring Deut to say something he would regret. He was very protective of his daughter he fought so hard to keep with them in the waking world.

"You must be hungry and tired, Zeconi..." Deut replied carefully. "You can come and lie down in the medical room if you like. And also... I am very sorry for what the guard did. He was being silly." He regulated his language to more simple words, pronounced slowly. They would seem to come out more fluently, much less stiffly as a result. "I know some ponies who can mend your medicine bag, make it as good as new." At least, he hoped that somepony in the camp had that knowledge...

The young filly slowly nodded to his offer. She really just wanted to be out of this big cave with such angry ponies around. Her father, however, didnt like the idea but wasnt going to tell her she had chosen wrong. Instead, he said to Deut with a warning in his tone, "I dont want any of your medicines given to my daughter unless I see them first, is that clear?"

The male zebra sighed, his anger slowly settling as he glanced back to his wife and older foal, before turning back to Deut. He gave the unicorn a curt nod and said shortly, "Very well then..."
Zeconi looked up to Deut and her father with a hint of fear in her eyes, but her father smiled to her and encouraged her, "We'll come with, dont worry my daughter."

Deuterium looked back at the poor girl with a faint smile. He knew that these were trying times for everyone, so to some degree he could understand the fear that the father must have been going through... Hopefully one day they wouldn't have to worry so much.

....or at least, that's what Deut intended to happen. At the back of his mind, something stirred... A little bit of doubt. He wondered why it was he was here. This, what he was doing right now... It wasn't going to get him anywhere. He was basically sheperding ponies, well, zebras in this case, to another room and leaving it at that. His work was totally auxiliary...
Just then, his headache flared up massively, much worse than before. It felt as if his head was going to split open. He clutched his head and winced, not realising at first that the zebras were still looking at him...

The parent Zebras had begun to follow the tan stallion with their two children, the guards who had been collected for the problems from earlier had dispersed and gone back to their posts as seeing Deut was taking care of things now. With Deut's sudden pause and painful expression, the zebra family paused and looked at one another, unsure what the stallion was doing.
The smallest zebra filly, Zeconi, looked up to her mother with increasing anxiety, "Mommy, what's wrong with him?"
"I'm not certain, my love, just give him a moment..." The mother had replied, silently wondering if this was some form of cultural difference they may not be accustomed to.

"Ooh. I hear that."
Pandy's voice rang in Deut's ears. Deut had almost forgotten he existed. "Pandy... Not now, please not now..." He turned quickly to the confused zebras and blurted out an explanation. Give me a moment, I've got a bad migraine... He then addressed the spirit in his head again in a hushed tone, aside from the zebras. "Just... Go back to sleep." "Hear me out. I have an idea... I know how you can improve your station." "I don't like the sound of this..." "You know I can feel what you do, Deut. I know exactly what it is you want. Power. Fame. Glory. Deuterium, the most important pony in the world. You could have it... But you're too shy, too depressed. You don't have the self-esteem, the guts to do it."
Deut's migraine worsened and he let out a groan. "It's getting worse... The medical grotto is over that way." he quickly explained to the zebras again before once again whispering to the spirit within him. "You're starting to sound like how you used to."
"Except this time I'm suggesting an idea."
"If you're suggesting letting you out--"
"Not just letting me out. It's more complex than that. See, When you let me out, it's like I'm backseat driving. It strains us both. Makes us both weaker. Drains my magic and drains your energy. No, what I'm suggesting is you let me sit in the driver's seat."
"You don't mean...?"
"Oh, I mean. I mean seriously. I have the power, I just don't have the body..."
Deut took a while to take in the suggestion, a look of abject horror spreading over his face. "No. No, you can't..." He whispered, noticeably fightened. He lowered his head to the floor, clutching at it in combined pain and terror, his breath slowly getting deeper and more pained. He was reminded of how Pandy used to torment him before he gained control over him...
"Why so stingy, Deut? You know it's the best for both of us."
"How is it the best for both of us? You're suggesting I give up my body!" He couldn't stop his voice from getting louder. It felt as if it was just him and Pandy, alone in the cubic metre or so of space that his body took up...
"Listen to me, Deut. You might have the biggest brain in the camp, but you are weak! You can't defend yourself, let alone do anything! You don't want to be here, speaking back and forth in Zebrecian all day! You want to be out there, taking in all the glory, being a hero! And you know what, so do I! And I'm not bowing to you any more! You are holding us back, you are holding ME back."
"Stop... Please!"
"Why are you being such a coward? I thought you accepted those feelings long ago! It's not that you can't do anything, it's that you WON'T! I've had it!"
"I don't because I don't think I can!"
"It's under your nose, you idiot! And if you don't take it, then I will!"
Deut's migraine reached a fever pitch, and he collapsed to the floor, his horn starting to glow bright purple, not by his own control. He let out a cry of pain as he fell onto his back, clutching at his temples.
"Gaaah!"
"Hold still! This'll be over quicker and be less painful if you don't resist."
Despite this, Deut did indeed resist... But it was for nought, as the pain just got worse and worse and his body started growing slowly more and more numb... It was like his body was slowly disappearing, being stolen away by something powerful...
"Stop... please... AAAAGH!"
"Why are you still... struggling?!"
"Pandy, it hurts... Everything's fading..."
Everything seemed to be going dark. All his sense failed him, Sight, touch, smell, even sound, bar Pandy's terrible voice...
"Survival of the fittest, Deut! This is the best path for both of us!"
"PANDY! STOP! GAAAAAAAHH!!"
Deut screamed and screamed and screamed as the last few drops of his willpower melted away... And his screams slowly began fading into maniacal laughter.
Pandemonium opened his eyes, which were now glowing bright purple, and relished the power that flowed into him as he slowly took control of the body that once belonged to Deut. He lifted himself into the air with ease, a small ring of purple magic forming around him.
"Yes! All this power... It's been kept from me, it feels so good!"
What was left of Deut spiralled away into the back of Pandy's mind, crying for unheard help...

The zebras had stayed where they were, but as Duet began to talk more and more to himself, they began to edge away. Camp ponies walking about the commons broke from their tasks to look over at Deut in curiosity when suddenly, something seemed to snap in the unicorn stallion right before their eyes.
Panic seemed to grip the cave as Deuterium suddenly rose into the air with a darkness about him. Screams and yells began to echo around the chambers as ponies darted about, either fleeing or running to get help. In no time at all, the guards from before had returned, now standing in front of the zebra family, thinking the out of control stallion had lost it with them.
The elite of the guards of the group, a red unicorn stallion, called up at Deut, his voice heavy with authority. "Deuterium! Lower yourself to the ground at once and douse your magic! This behavior is unacceptable in the Commons, this is your first and final warning!" The red guard's horn lit with magic, and his 7 fellow guards ponies did the same in their own way, opening their wings, unsheathing knives, and taking a ready stance while others lit their own horns.

Pandy looked down at the guard, smirking as he floated there. He could have polished off all these guards with ease right here and now, but he thought better of it for the moment. Let them make the first strike, so he can best them, show just how powerful he was. "Deuterium? My good friend, 'Deuterium' isn't home! He was too weak for his own good..." He looked around at the guards with his glowing purple eyes. "I'm Pandemonium...And from today, this body is mine! And as for the warning? Try me. I'm more powerful than any of you, I'm willing to wager."

The red unicorn guard stood his ground, clenching his teeth as his magic glow intensified and grew a bit. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, a hoof laid on his shoulder and a mare stepped forward. It was another guard, a light pink pegasus who Deut had chatted with many times in the dinning caves named Dainty Rose. The red stallion looked to her as she opened her mouth to speak, her eyes filled with worry for her friend.
"Deut!" Rose pleaded with him, not believing that this demon had taken full control of the pony she knew, "Calm down! Think about what you are doing, don't make us fight you! What are you trying to do? What do you want?" As she spoke, the other guards spread out to surround Pandemonium's floating form, 2 pegasi taking to the air to defend from above. It was 8 against one if he chose to make this messy...

Pandy recognised the voice... Deut's little guard friend. They had often spoken when Deut was off duty or in the mess hall, but Pandy didn't have quite the same feelings. "Sorry, sweet cheeks, Deut ain't at home! And for the record... I don't care what I'm doing. I'm not trying to do anything. All I 'want' is to have some fun!"
At that moment, a wave of power erupted from Pandemonium and he began firing haphazardly, throwing his head back in maniacal laughter. "Ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaa!" This feels so GOOOOOD! I'm gonna kick EVERYPONY'S flank into the next town along!" He then took a moment to smirk at Rose. "Except you." His next magic blast was aimed directly at her... But far from attempting to hurt her, this blast was intended to send her flying towards another part of the grotto, away from the fray. Such a gesture might have been mistaken for a touch of consideration or thoughtfulness on his part, but no. Pandy knew what it was like to sit in the back seat, and just in case a little bit of Deut was still in his brain, he wanted to show him what he could have had. He had plans for that little mare... Plans that Deut probably had had too, but was too chicken to actually follow through with. After that though, he went back to whare he was before - blasting everypony he could see with his immensely powerful magic. "Who next? Magic for everyone~! One for YOU and one for YOU and one for ALL OF YOU~!" He called out in a mockingly bright voice, blasting at anypony who tried to come near.

Rose cried out and flapped her wings wildly as Pandemonium threw her to the side. She was sent a long distance before she hit the wall in the gathering Nook, far away from the fray, where she now laid unconscious.
The red stallion of the team of guards bellowed an order to attack, and soon blasted his concentrated magic at the possessed stallion. His other guards followed suit, blasting their own magic, earth ponies threw huge boulders, while the pegasi from above threw chains down to try to shackle Pandemonium while he was distracted by ponies below. Screams erupted around them as chaos broke out through the bystanding camp ponies. Magical blasts from Pandemonium were flying all around, and they were dodging and trying to flee as fast as possible, only to have their path interrupted by another blast.

Pandemonium continued haphazardly spraying magic at whoever came close, dodging the magical attacks and items being thrown at him with ease. Beams of purple light seared the armour of several guards. Spells bounced off an invisible wall. Great big balls of energy detonated near groups, sending them all flying. Anytime somepony got close, a great dome of energy blasted them all back. However, what Pandemonium didn't quite realise was that he was exerting himself a little too much. He'd cumulatively used an astonishing amount of magic with his attacks as well as his defence, not to mention att the attacks he'd dodged. Whilst dodging, one of the chains thrown by the Pegasi struck his hind leg and he cursed in pain, returning to blasting and shielding, but the weakness was evident. Sweat was beginning to show on his brow and his cries of mirth started sounding a little strained. He wouldn't be able to withstand much more...

[Enter Moxie, from the Tunnels]
Moxie's hooves clicked hard against the rocky floor of the caves as she swiftly galloped into the Commons, a ghastly sight waiting for her. Ponies all around were hurt, scattered, and some were rushing about with screams of terror as they dodged flying balls of energy. Moxie came to a stop and looked around, her wings open and ready to move if she needed to, and quickly located the source of all this chaos. It hit her like a ton of bricks. "D-Deut?..." Moxie stood frozen to the spot, her jaw agape. Not but 30 feet away, Deut was hovering in the air as ponies tried to blast him down or shackle him. "What the..."
Trying to grasp what was going on, Moxie stood motionless for a good moment as the others caught up with her.
