Name: Forte Fermata
Nickname: Forts (only by close friends)
Age: (Human Age Equivalent) Early 30s
Gender: Male
Species: Pegasus
Place of Birth: Canterlot
Occupation: Previously; Equestrian Military Special Forces, First chair trombonist for the Canterlot Brass Band. Currently, refugee and freedom fighter
Allegiance: Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, his friends, and the good people of Equestria
Relationship Status: Single, and he can be quite flirtatious
Mane: Short dark brown mane, usually kept messy, only lightly brushed forward. His tail follows suit.
Eyes: Deep green
Living Relatives: None
General Description: A decent sized green pegasus, only slightly taller than the average stallion. His wing muscles are subtle, but well defined, and the rest of his body is sturdy and firm. His mane is a dark brown, and he doesn't generally style it, so it is usually messily brushed forward and left alone. His tail is kept short, also with minimal styling. His cutie mark is two trombones, crossed like swords, with bells up.l
Skills: Forte is a more-than-decent trombonist, having taken first chair in the Canterlot Brass Band after returning from military service. His time in the Equestrian Special Forces, as well as early training in high school marching bands, has made him quite adept at percision flying. He is certainly not the fastest, but his accuracy and manuverability are above average, and he is capable of flying in unusual positions such as upside down, sideways, and backwards. He has a natural affinity for marksmanship, both with a bow and crossbow, and his training included stealth and survival skills. The years since the war has only increased these skills as he avoided the changeling forces.
Faults: Forte is a very blunt pony, and often times speaks without noticing what his words may mean to somepony else. He is not afraid to speak his mind, and stands by what he believes in, even if it is not in his best interest. He also has a hard time picking up on social cues, and tends not to pick up on subtle hints until they are stated outright. He has a strong sense of justice, and this gets him into trouble more often than not as he butts into situations and lets his anger prompt him to act first and think second. He also has a strong fear and hatred of changelings, and will not hesitate to threaten or enact violence should he see or suspect one is nearby.
Equipment: He carries his trombone with him at all times in a custom, low profile case strapped to his back. Inside is his trombone, various mouthpieces, cleaning supplies, a small screwdriver a knife, and a bag with about 30 crossbow bolts, as well as 5 specially enchanted less-than-lethal bolts for subduing an opponent without causing permanent harm. He also carries a small custom crossbow from his time in the military, capable of being fired by hoof or mouth, in a holster under his left wing. It is normally covered by his wing, and when he is on the ground, there is no indication that he has it. The holster has slots for 4 bolts, as well as one he keeps loaded in the crossbow.
History: Born and raised in Canterlot, Forte's father, a light blue earth pony, was a tubist in Celestia's Own, the best orchestra in all of Equestria, who's members are hoof picked by Celestia herself every five years. His mother, a deep purple unicorn, was a successful jazz saxophonist, and this made it no surprise when he got his cutie mark at his first concert as a colt. The next day, as celebration, his parents took him to a hill just outside Canterlot for a picnic. The view was wonderful, looking out over Canterlot, with the rest of Equestria in the background. It would have been a wonderful day of fun and family... But then the changelings attacked. There were only a few, and Forte had next to no clue what they were as his parents urged him to hide in the picnic basket, promising that they would be back soon. He heard sounds of a struggle, a cry of pain, and then the buzzing of wings. Then silence. He was unsure of what had happened, but he trusted his parents. He stayed in the basket until night had fallen. When he finally poked his head out, his parents were nowhere to be seen. Panicking, he rushed back to Canterlot and ran up to the first police pony he saw, crying and babbling of bug ponies taking his parents. He was taken to the police station, where he stayed the night in unrestful sleep. The next day, his aunt and uncle arrived to pick him up, promising to take care of him until his parents were found. Sadly, they never were...
He spent the next few years in Fillydelphia with his aunt, uncle, and cousins. This portion of his life was dominated by depression and fits of anger. The only solace he found was in the Fillydelphia High School Marching Mares, the marching band of the Fillydelphia High School. Here, his playing skills only grew, as well as his flying skills. However, due to his depression, his social skills suffered. During this time, he studied every source of information he could on the creatures that had taken his parents and his life in Canterlot from him. He remained this way until an Equestrian Military recruiter visited his school, and he felt this was his chance to take revenge on the changelings. He signed up the very next day, and was shipped off to basic that summer.
In basic, he met another pegasus stallion, Tempest Gale, and though the two got off to a rocky start, Tempest's gruff demeanor and no-nonsense attitude broke through Forte's shell. The two became fast friends, relying on each other for support and motivation throughout training. During basic, the higher ups recognized that these two were capable of amazing things together. That, Tempest's keen eyes, and Forte's new found affinity for marksmanship, drove them to promote the two to Special Forces training, where their skills and friendship only grew. Together, they quickly proved to be one of the most successful sniper/spotter teams the Special Forces had seen, ranking 12th in the all-time academy records. This was not through any sort of talent or destiny, though. Forte was a musician to his core, and Tempest was a simple weather pony from Las Pegasus. Their success came from the bond of their friendship.
They spent 5 years in the Special Forces together, their career culminating in their final mission. It was a little known conflict on the Griffon/Equestrian border. A crazed griffon clan leader sought to invade a nearby pony settlement in order to expand his own territory. When diplomatic solutions failed, Forte and Tempest were sent in to eliminate the threat. They infiltrated the griffon's stronghold without a problem, but the mission fell to hell when they were setting up in the tower across from the clan leader's chambers. They chatted quietly as they set up their bow and sights, as they usually did to ease tensions. Tempest made a joke about griffon females and baked bads, and Forte laughed a little too loud. It was an innocent mistake, but it alerted the griffons and brought the full force of the stronghold upon them. They were captured and spent 2 weeks as the griffons prisoners, forced to eat meat and fight each other for the griffons amusement. Eventually, though, the griffons grew bored, and their guard grew lax. On the night the griffons were implimenting their attack on the pony village, Forte and Tempest had their opening. They broke out of their prison, and managed to retrieve their gear and finish the mission. When the clan leader fell, the rest of the stronghold fell into disarray, and the two tried to make a hasty retreat. A few of the griffons gave chase, though, and one got a lucky shot through Tempest's wings. Tempest fell from the sky, and while Forte deperately wanted to dive to save him, he knew that doing so would be the death of both of them. Forte was forced to leave his best friend behind, a fact which still haunts him to this day.
When he returned to Equestria and reported in, he expressed his desire to leave the service. He could not continue without Tempest. Though they tried to get him to stay, the brass soon relented, and granted Forte an honorable discharge, as well as a special crossbow for his service. Forte named the crossbow Tempest's Gale, after his fallen friend, and wore it under his left wing ever since.
After leaving the military, Forte moved back to Canterlot for the first time since he was a colt. The money he had saved throughout his military service allowed him to afford a small home on the edge of the city, and to support himself as he grieved. Soon, however, he realized that this was not what Tempest, or his parents, would want for him. He managed to pick himself up, and continued doing what he loved. He auditioned for various ensambles throughout Canterlot before finally landing a place in the Canterlot Brass Band. He quickly rose through his section, making first chair within the year. He remained there for 10 years, going on multiple concert tours throughout Equestria. But everything changed when the changelings attacked.
Forte stayed in Canterlot throughout most of the war. He hadn't seen a changeling since his parents were abducted, and though he wanted to help and fight, his fear stayed his hoof. He remained in Canterlot throughout the conflict, but when the fight came to him, his anger and his thirst for revenge overcame his fear. He assisted the royal forces, setting up in towers and on rooftops, firing at any changeling he saw, moving when he needed to. He helped the royal guard hold the line until the very end. However, when the final battle between the Princesses and Chrysalis came to a close, and the final burst of magic dissipated, he fled. He refused to believe that the Princesses were truly dead, and he fled from Canterlot, retreating and hiding throughout Equestria, searching for some sign, some way to bring his Princesses back. He continued his search fruitlessly for a year until he stumbled upon a refugee camp in the Smokey Mountain Range. Seeing so many ponies in need, he abandoned his search and adopted Camp New Hayven as his new home, and has been there since, serving as a combat instructor for the camp.
Camp Divisions: Forte feels that they should be taking the fight to Chrysalis as soon as possible, but he reluctantly acknoledges the fact that they are in no position to even make a dent in her forces. He is still loyal to the Princesses, especially Celestia, despite the evidence that they are gone. He believes that it would be best for them to stay in the mountains, as it is the easiest position to defend that is available to them, and he advocates strict rules concerning personal freedoms and rationing, which he believes would give them the best chance for survival and growth.
